Extreme Body Modification?

I was on BME looking at tattoos when i came across all these other types of body modifications and one was called nullification (which was voluntary amputation of body parts).

I'm really confused about it (i'm 16) how would you get it? Wouldn't it be illegal for doctors to do it?

Can anyone help clear this up?

Update:

EDIT: It says people can get fingers or even their genitals removed, that is what i was asking about. I didn't know if a doctor would amputate someones finger if there was nothing wrong with it?

And I'd never want to get anything amputated, I'm just confused about the subject.

Nullification is an interesting subject in the body mod world. It takes an open mind to accept that a person can be completely normal but just have an urge to remove a piece of their own body. Most people do it themselves or do something that would cause a medical doctor to remove it for them. I'm not going to go into great depth as to how they do it because many of the techniques are not sanitary and I do not recommend them.

If you want to learn more, get a subscription to BME and read some of the articles. They are extremely informative and are much more open about the subject than Y!A is. Hopefully, it opens your mind to the way other people think and allows you to consider their opinions, even if you don't understand them.

Have fun on BME, it's a great resource for the body mod community and those interested in it!

    Many people do it themselves

From what I understand of it, they see the bit they get amputated as 'wrong', and don't want it as part of their body. By removing it, they are happier within their skin.

If getting it done medically, I'd imagine you'd have to go private to someone prepared to do something that wouldn't benefit physical health, although it would benefit mental health. By arguing that mental health would benefit, there could probably be a case.

(I've heard of people who get breast surgery on the NHS because they are mentally distressed by how they look; eg too big, too small, lopsided...)

It is illegal for doctors to perform.

It is illegal for anyone to perform this, but those who want it badly enough find ways.

Usually it consists of a person putting a tourniquet on until the limb dies, then they sew it up and hope for the best.

    Its a form of fetishism.
