probably not. a head-on probably would have resulted in flooding of only the first section; not enough to sink it.

Possibly, it all depends on the speed it was travelling at. When the Titanic hit the iceberg, it was travelling at close to 20 mph forward even though the engines were put into full speed reverse the second the iceberg was spotted. The impact of a ship that large slamming into an iceberg at that speed would probably rupture bulkheads and cause severe damage. Whether or not the Titanic would've sank is a question that will never be answered. However, it is clear that if the Titanic hit the iceberg head on, she would have taken much longer to sink, therefore rescue ships such as the Carpathia would have almost certainly arrived in time to evacuate most or all of the passengers who survived the collision.

If the Titanic had hit the iceberg straight on, according to theory, it would NOT have sunk.

See the documentary, linked below: "The Iceberg That Sank The Titanic"

  • No, it shouldn't. What happened was that the titanic scraped the side of the iceberg, this allowed water to fill the sides, the weakest parts of a ship.

From what I've read before if the Titanic hit the iceberg straight on the ship would have sank slower.

It might have still sank...but perhaps not as fast. The way it hit the iceberg sliced into several of the compartments. The damage was just too severe. If the damage was limited to just the front few compartments they may have been able to slow the water and stay afloat for several more hours.

a true head on collision, one that would actually brought the titantic to a complete stop, or made teh iceberg go the same speed, would of instantly destroyed teh titanic.

its fender bender vs a head on collision.

the titanic wouldnt of sank at all if numerous things had been done.

1st and foremost, stopping until they knew exactly how bad it was.

water tight compartments that were actually watertight, they didnt have lids, like a cup, once its full it just overflows.

probably not, as only the front end would have been filling with water, they could have blocked off that section so the water didnt enter any other area of the ship.

it would have slowed down the sinking speed considerably if it was only hit in the front.

They say if it would have just stopped it would not have sunk, but the captain kept going and forced water into the breach thus overflowing the bulk heads
