How should I handle it?

I left my employer once for a better job. The "better job" did not work out. Luckly my former employer took me back. The question is....other opportunities are poping up. If I get an offer how should I handle my employer? I know that if I give them notice again they will then show me the door that same very minute. Either way I will not receive any references from my manager.

Research the opportunities. You have a job in a bad economy, take advantage of it to the maximum and don't rush into anything new. Talk to people who work at these other places. Not the managers or people you're sent to talk with, figure out where people go after work and buy someone a beer. Make sure that something really is better before you jump, and make sure you really have started at your new job before giving notice at the old one. Also if you won't be getting a reference and have a new job already giving notice may not be all that important. It's a courtesy to begin with and in this economy all but the most skilled people can be easily replaced.
