Depends on if you want to do a theme or not. My son loved Blues Clues so we did a themed party for him for his first. My daughter who is turning one on Feb 9th will be Birthday Princess. I did pails with shovels and used them for the goody bag. bubbles are cheap favors along with matchboxes (buy box of 10 and each kid can have one.) You can find alot of stuff on ebay or one of the online party stores. I saved money buy purchasing matching cups rather than the printed ones. We had it at the Discovery Center (a learning place for kids) since my apt wasn't big enough and I hadn't bought our house yet. The have little candy wraps that you can have printed I thought were really cute they can do regular ones or nuggets or dots to put on the bottom of kisses. Most anything as las you pick a theme is available.

Have a family party! Have it at your house and plan some activities for the kids while you guys can chat! For the gift bags just go to party city and buy little party favors! You don't have to have a big party for such a small guy! That would scare him! :)

Keep it small. :-) They get so overwhelmed at their first birthday with a lot of people and hoorah going on. It's not much fun with a crying baby.
Party Favors: rhythm instruments are a favorite with most ages if you have a mixed age group. One year I just did a dollar store trip and filled mini gift bags. They were a hit and it was easy!
We usually had their own personal mini cake. It always works out well because they immediately go for that frosting :-) Have fun!
