Kovalchuk, DiPietro et al LOL?

NHL GM's are supposedly intelligent hockey people, right.

OK, I know the team owners are involved as well but why do they give out these ridiculous 10-15 year contracts with huge money while effectively hamstringing their teams cap wise for years to come.

In what world is Kovalchuk worth 100+ million, he's a 40 goal a year guy at best (maybe 20 this year).

I can only assume that guys like, Yzerman, Lemieux, Gretzky, Kurri, Anderson, Messier can only lament that they were born to soon to take part in all this insanity.

Gretzky's first NHL contract was for 20 years (eventually shortened to 18) and Mario Lemieux signed a 12 year deal in 1987.

The 'insanity' has always been there.

The Devils put the player ahead of the team. They deserve what's happening.

NJ wasn't the only team interested in Kovalchuk and he was perhaps the most appealing UFA EVER........and by spreading it out over a long period of time, it is less of a salary cap hit. Kovalchuk's cap hit is only 6.6MM......pretty darn good for a 40 goal player in his prime. People are knee jerk because he is struggling. Nobody is questioning Ovechkin's 9.5MM cap hit (almost 3MM more per season) during a season where he will be lucky to get 30 goals.

In what world is Kovalchuk worth 100MM........obviously in this world and considering that Atlanta, NYI, LA and NJ all offered 100+ million...........................

I still don't understand why people think this deal handcuffs the Devils...........again, he is making 6.6MM on the cap hit. LESS than Brian Campbell, Jason Spezza, Chris Drury, Scott Gomez, Tomas Vanek and about 20 others.

As for DiPietro......I think it was a good contract, it was high risk for high reward, they bought Dipietros' free agency from him. People forget he was projected to be a superstar and was just derailed by injuries.

At 4.5MM per season, they overpay for the first few years of the contract but IF he had done as well as projected, he would have been a steal.

At the time he signed, it wasn't unreasonable to think that he would be a top 5 NHL goalie of the future (and Team USA's future mainstay).......so, when you now look at Roberto Luongo making 10MM this season or JS Giguere or Kiprusoff making 7MM........all of the sudden, 4.5MM would have been a STEAL.

Oh but all of that money spent for him to be injured? Teams insure their top 5 or 6 contracts, no harm, no foul. Salary cap implications? Umm........LTIR! Besides, it's not like the NYI need cap space, they have room.

So, IMO......the potential risk outweighed the potential reward and I still maintain it was a great contract.
