Pros and cons of teen buying a car?
Hello. I am a teenage girl and I've had my license for 4 months; however, I have no car. I can use my mom's car on the weekends when she's not using it, but I would like my own to drive to and from school/my activities. Currently, my mom drives me everywhere during the week.
My mother said that if I get a job and I can prove that I can earn enough money per month to cover my insurance and gas bills, then I can have her car. So, basically, she will give me the car for free, but I must pay insurance, gas, and repairs (if needed).
My dilemma: is it worth it to work most of my week just to put all my hard-earned money towards a car so I can be independent and drive myself everywhere, OR is it a waste of time when I have a mother willing to drive me around anyways?

Not having your own car at 17 would be like being a bird without wings. At 17 its all about being spontaneous and you can't do that if you have no wheels. Not only does having your own car give you freedom and independence but it enhances your identity and popularity which in turn gives you more drive and energy to get on with embracing your youth. Plan for the future too, imagine turning 18 and you did what your mother said and you have your own wheels, you would feel like you've moved forward and your mother would be proud. Go Girl!

If you are talking money, it is by far better to rely on mom. You still have the car on weekends and none of the expense. If you get a job, you are going to have no time for fun or driving during the week, because all your time will be spent at school or the job. (less fun activities) If your Mom has half a mind to give your the car, she must be thinking about a new one for herself. If you let her trade in the old car, then you will probably get to use the new one on weekends. (sometimes)
BUT. getting a job is a good thing anyway. and will make you look responsible. And you will never get a car near as good for anything close to free.
So I say get the job, and offer to pay for the insurance, but ask your mother to keep driving you places in the present car. She will be impressed, When she does get a new car, she will trust you and everyone will be happy.

It's worth it because you learn to be independent. Buying a car is a symbol. It means you are independent and you don't have to depend on your parents for everything. It also teaches you how real world is.
At your age, you need to learn to be independent. Plus you can meet great people at work and still have fun. Also you don't have to spend all of your free time working because you only need enough money to cover the insurance and gas. But you need to learn to be independent. What are you going to do in college? Is your mom going to drive you still? That's pathetic and shows irresponsibility on your part.

I think it's worth it, but that is just me. I am 17, and it is really nice to be able to drive yourself to places. You will eventually need a car for college or after college. If your mom is reliable and you don mind having her pick you up, you might want to wait a little bit and buy a car later.

save your money and learn to be more self reliant at the same time.
Take the bus or ride a bicycle.
it is fun and helps you from getting fat and builds muscle and makes you look good.
stop being so frigging lazy !
then when the weather is to bad for that ,, have your mom drive you.

Yeah, it's worth it, cuz then you can go places that you wouldn't want your mom to know about ;)
