Should I rewatch Full Metal Alchemist before watching Brotherhood?

A while ago I was watching what I thought was the original FMA on tv. It was the episode where scar attempted to kill Ed and Mustang comes to his aid. From everything I could tell it seemed to be identical to the one I had seen in the past. Then on my cable guide it stated the episode guide that it was from 2009 which I found confusing because I was sure I had seen the episode many years before that. I then discovered it was Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood and I found out the differences between them even though it seemed to be exactly the same. I was thinking about going back and re watching the original series (and Conqueror of Shamballa) before I start watching the new manga canon episodes. Would that be a good idea or would I just end up confused or pissed off?

I would not suggest rewatching the first series in preparation for watching Brotherhood. Though the storyline is the same as the first for the first thirteen episodes or so, there are several subtle differences in Brotherhood that add up and become extremely important later in the series. My suggestion overall for watching Brotherhood, especially the first thirteen episodes - treat the series as its own and don't think about the first series. It may make things confusing.

However, I DO suggest watching FMA again after you finish Brotherhood, because there are several slower and more personal moments in the first series than the second - Brotherhood is fast, there's literally two episodes of filler material in a sixty-four episode show, and the action just keeps going, which means that much of the emotional impact from the first series is lost, particularly in the first thirteen episodes. In terms of action though, and overall storyline, Brotherhood is amazing. Episode 19 is commonly considered the "Growing the Beard" episode, and it gets better and better.

I would rewatch the original just so you can get some insight on certain situations, because it goes into a lot more details of how Full metal became the alchemist of the people. It's helps understanding the characters better and Brotherhood makes small references to the originals events.

You would be fine only watching brotherhood though, but i would recommend watching both, because both are really good series that are completely different.

No. Brotherhood is based almost completely off the manga, whereas the 2004 series had a completely separate storyline. Don't worry about re-watching the old series. It might not necessarily confuse you, but they have two completely different story lines and some characters even have different names. Your re-watching the old one really wouldn't be doing you any good.

No, I think if you have a general idea about the plot there's not reason to re-watch FMA; but that's not stopping you cause it is pretty fantastic. But in relation to watching brotherhood; nah I think because theirs a large difference between the two you should just watch it. (Its really good by the way)

    Naw.

Brotherhood and the original FMA anime are nothing alike... Storyline wise.

Brotherhood isn't a sequel to the original. You'll probably be happier watching Brotherhood, most (if not all) consider it a lot better.
