Are UK motorways statistically safer than other roads?

I know there are good reasons why this might be: good separation from oncoming traffic, slip roads that build you up to speed and generally straighter trajectories.

But do the statistics back this up? If so how?

Yes, the safest are Motorways followed by urban roads, the least safe are classified (A+B) country roads, trees always win.

yes statistically the overall chances of accidents are less likely than in town or country roads as with obviously the reasons being that traffics travelling the same direction, slipoads to proceed to a appropriate speed, overtaking lanes and vulnerable users are banned (pedestrians, cyclists, tractors, learner drivers etc), hard shoulder so theres less chance of causing extreme obstruction if you happen to breakdown or generally need to stop in an emergancy and the central res preventing head on collisons as of course the 'impact' speed in a head on wd b greater (speed of the two cars added together=impact speed) in that case

speed isn't realisitically the sole cause of the vast majority of accidents although it is often a big contributor to the seriousness once there is one and of course accidents that do happen on motorways are generally gonna be much more serious but its realising the difference in having an accident at all as to how serious an accident would be should it be unfortunate enough to happen to you

All roads are safe, it's the people using them that cause all the problems. But yes Motorways are the safest, everyone going in the same direction at roughly the same speed without traffic lights, roundabouts or other obstacles to get in your way

Yes by far and away the safest roads.

Urban roads are much more dangerous, but also Country side roads are also more dangerous.

As you point out, the fact that all the traffic is going one direction and separated helps, but also the lack of pedestrians and vehicles at junctions, all reduce the chances of accidents.

    Yes.

Statistics from R.O.S.P.A., the T.R.L., Brake and many surveys over the last 40 years will back this up.

Interestingly, the same statistics also point out that 75% of all road accidents in the U.K. occur at LESS than 30mph. One for the "Speed kills" nutters to mull over, methinks...

Generally yes, because all are going in the same direction at roughly the same speed.

BUT when it goes wrong, its bad because generally more vehicles are involved often due to the shunting effect.

http://safermotorways.co.uk/statistics HAve a little read there too - some interesting facts!

They collate the evidence from the scenes of accidents. This shows us we are safer and indeed one of the safest in Europe.
