Which would you say is the best, Apple Mac or pc? Please give your reasons for your choice.?

I am interested in which one people prefer and why. I have done a little research online and people seem to be very polarised in their opinion. I am just curious as I have a Toshiba Satellite laptop which I have found to be excellent, but I really have no preference other than the question of cost!

Update:

Macs do get viruses, although perhaps not as much as pcs simply because there is more malware configured for pcs, but a good antivirus should keep them out. I know of people who have Macs and have got viruses, maybe they were a little complacent, although I agree that they are less likely to have them.

Update 2:

Found this online which I think supports my earlier statement. www.http://ask-leo.com/are_macs_inherently_safer.html

    PC:

    + Easily upgradeable and customisable

+ Extremely large amount of software out there for it

+ Compatibility with pretty much everything

    + Cheap

    - More likely to get a virus although a well maintained PC should have no problem.

    - OS is written to have to work with many types of hardware so prone to crashing.

    - Microsoft sucks

    MAC:

+ Less prone to viruses (although not impossible).

+ Less likely to crash as the OS is built to work with specific hardware.

+ Comes with decent software as standard (i.e. garage band, iLife etc)

+ Good ideas incorporated into the technology (simple things like magnetic power cord to prevent snagging and breaking your mactop)

    - Limited warranty

    - Expensive

    - Not as easy to upgrade

    - Apple sucks

BTW: Don't let people tell you a mac is better than a PC or vice versa. These are what we call "Fanboys" who given the option, would quite happily insert their floppy drive into their kit because they can't seem to understand the fact that each has its own pro's and con's.

Think about what you need from your device and whether what you are considering will deliver those needs. Personally I go with PC because it's cheaper than a mac, it does what I need it to do, I am comfortable using Windows and I know that whatever I use on it will be compatible with the hardware at my University.

    Hope this helps.

Since Apple sells proprietary systems, I for one refuse to buy one. Apple after 30 years STILL tries to control their customers. You pay 2 to 3 grand for an Apple Mac that isn't compatible with the software market when you can buy a PC with the same or better hardware for half the price that is. They are NOT better in the arts and media area either. There is far more software in this area for a PC and at lower prices. I've got 30+ years in industrial programing and can guarantee you that a 2000 dollar Mac can NOT do what a 600 dollar PC can do in the field. A PC is a valuable multi-tool. You can do ANYTHING with one. A programmers first lesson is that a computers power is measured by what it can do. Mac comes no where near close to the functionality that a PC has. I'll glady stick with my freedom of choice in software and hardware at competitive prices.

EDIT: To the fellow below with virus problems. We have another saying in the field. A computer is ONLY as smart as the person using it. If you aren't willing to spend the time learning how to use, care for and maintain one, you shouldn't be touching ANY computer..

Me too have a happy Toshiba Satellite :D !cheers!

Apple Mac is very carefully configured hardware and the apple OS is a fun to use once you get to it.

However, the PC is the best from the cost, performance and upgradability viewpoint.
