Do you think there are really only two genders?

This has nothing to do with sexual orientations, so this isn't a gay or strait question. I mean you have people with traditional male and female personality traits but then you have people with a mixture of them and some with opposite traits from the traditional of their sex.

* example of traits is like a man that is very nurturing or a women who is unemotional and doest like to share her feelings.

Update:

Sex and gender are two different concepts. Gender has nothing to do with your genitals. Biological Sex is what you look like physically. Gender is how you see the world and relate to the world.

technically there are way more than 2 genders. However there are only 2 "sexes" These are the biological sexes you were born with. Your gender is something completely different. Gender is how you identify yourself in a sexuality.

Men can have very nurturing qualities while still being heterosexual and women can be very withdrawn with their emotions like men sometimes are. These qualities dont have to do with genders, these are just personality traits.

I have a good friend who is a complete girly, girl yet when it comes to her feelings she doesn't talk too much about it. I also know men who are kind, quiet and compassionate but are still sexually straight as well.

Remember that gender, sex, and personality are three different things.

Damn, you are a computer engineer. There are two programs for animals genders or sex: XX and XY. Just because sometimes programs crash doesn't mean that there are more variations. Now, go to a male lion and try to convince him that sex and gender are two different things. Just because the media are confusing people with flamboyant words doesn't change Nature.

Read The Red Queen and The Selfish Gene. Two great books on biology and natural selection

I know there are only two genders. We are talking about x and y chromosomes here.

    trait

' trait is a distinct variant of a phenotypic character of an organism that may be inherited, environmentally determined or somewhere in between.[1] For example, eye color is a character or abstraction of an attribute, while blue, brown and hazel are traits." .1

    chromosome

'Chromosomes can be divided into two types—autosomes, and sex chromosomes. Certain genetic traits are linked to your sex, and are passed on through the sex chromosomes.' .2

Really there could be an infinite number of "genders" since "gender" is a construct of the human mind which is limitless. There is no limit to the human imagination so there is no limit to the number of "genders" humans could come up with.

Gender is more of a social construct. There is a whole subculture devoted to "transgendered."

    There is:

    XX

    XY

and to a lesser exent XXY and XYY syndromes where males receive an extra X or Y chromosome.

Biologically there are only two genders, with the occasional mixture of the two (hermaphrodite) thrown in for fun.
