What's Your Opinion on This Dog Kennel?
We had to use a new kennel when we traveled for the holidays. Our old kennel closed.
We dropped off our black lab on the Dec 23rd. They said that there was someone on site 24/7. There were about 15 dogs there when we dropped off.
We came home 2 days early, on Jan 1st, so we went over to pick up our dog at 5:30pm. We did not call first to notify them we were coming.
We found nobody at the kennel, and our dog was the only dog there, and he was locked in the main "play room", with no access to his crate. The lights were all off and the front door was locked. I was very concerned for our dog's safety, so I found an unlocked back door, and I went in to rescue him. I left a voicemail asking the kennel to call me at once so I arrange to pay my bill and pick up the crate. Two days later, and we haven't heard from them.
I will never use this kennel again, but I have to pick up our crate. What would you do? What thoughts do you have about this situation?

I think this is terrible. A kennel who say's there would be someone on site 24/7, and you go and no one is there.... Plus they leave a back door unlocked, with your dog in there. They have not returned your phone call for two days. If I were you, I would be furious at these people. I don't think you should pay them a dime for his stay their. I would go back in person, demand some answers, and get your crate. If they want payment, mention you will be going to the media about your dogs stay at this kennel, and I guarantee they will say no charge and give you your crate back. Good luck.

Perhaps something very serious happened to the kennel owners and you were the only pet owner that couldn't be reached? Someone was probably feeding and watering your dog, letting it into the play room for exercise, etc. other than the kennel owners. I would go back to the kennel and see if anyone is around. I would talk to neighbors. I would leave a note at the kennel saying I had picked up my dog so that if a neighbor or friend of the kennel owners is frantically searching for your dog (and has no access into the house where you phone message waits, and so does NOT know),maybe that person would see the note and contact you. (Include a phone number to reach you at).
If talking to neighbors, etc. is of no help, I would call the Police and ask if something happened there while you were away. I might also call the local hospitals to see if the kennel owner or owners had been admitted. This is very strannge!

Go back there during their normal operating business hours and demand your crate. I highly doubt they will keep it from you if you're there. Also I'd report them to the ASPCA, But you also have to consider if you can be in any trouble for going in and getting your dog, door unlocked or not. I know what they did was very wrong, but you could have a breaking and entering charge coming your way. Don't use them again and let other people know not to go to this kennel. It breaks my heart when we have to kennel our dogs because of this exact reason. You never really know if they're treating your dog right or if they're even feeding it regularly.

Sometimes if a dog is having a really hard time to adjust or some kennels will keep a dog in a larger room by themselves. The dog was inside? The fact that one door was unlocked could it be that someone was there? Or may have been during a shift change?

Not only was your dog locked away form his crate but no one was there or animals and there was a back door open?? Are you sure it didnt close down and your dog was just left because was a long term (more than a day or two) boarder? Go there and see if there is anything or one there. You may be SOL if there is no one there.
Also contact your BBB and see if they have any reports on them.

I worked in a kennel for years.
It sounds as though they left your dog in the play yard, like they forgot about him.
I would drop in earlier, pick up my crate.....and report them as well as spread the word to what happened.
But you definately need to talk to someone...

Sounds a little dodgy. I Wouldn't use that kennel again. There was no one there, and no dogs? Sounds like they forgot about him!

go there on a surprise and say all I want to do it pay my bill and pick up my crate. then oce you get there say you will report them to the state if they dont cooperate.

Obviously there's something wrong with them... I wouldn't use them either. I would demand my things back and if they refuse to answer my calls for a certain length of time, I'm not sure I would pay them.

I would file a complaint with the BBB and tell them that you want a refund or at least a discount.
