Much difference between ego stroking / need for validation?

If you just want more attention from certain people, does that mean there is a need for constant validation? Or does it just feel good to have your ego stroked?

I tend to believe there is a fine line between attention whore (constant need for validation) and the uber high you get from getting your ego stroked by people you are attracted to. Opinions? Thanks.

Update:

Interesting. Perhaps I am pathological. It's not the compliments I'm after though... It's the interaction. Not sure that makes much of a difference.

Perhaps I am just getting conditioned to the high. Kind of like a click/reward/click/reward.

Yes, I agree with you. The fine line is that in the case of a validation-need, the person is insecure and so wants a validation that upholds and praises him. The ego getting stroked involves a deed that a person already knows is right, and so there is no insecurity or need to prove something to himself. This just means that you want to bask in your own glory.

Yes, there is a vast difference between appreciating a genuine compliment (normal) and requiring a constant stream of them merely to maintain your current level of self-esteem (pathological).
