the British had 2 main goals.
firstly,to establish a balance of power in continental Europe,so as to ensure that no one power would become dominant.
Secondly,to keep the ports in Belgium out of the control of potential enemies who might use them to launch an invasion of Britain. This is why Belgium was incorporated into the new Kingdom of the Netherlands.
