should you still workout if every muscle in the body hurts?

I've been working out faithfully daily, and my body is hurting bad. My mind still wants to at least ride a stable bike for a hour, but my body is aching a lot. Should I still work through the aches.?

Definitely do the stationary bicycle. Better yet treadmill or elliptical machine if you are able.

These machines work more muscle groups than the bicycle.

It sounds like you are trying to do too much too fast.

Part of a New Years resolution?

Continue to go through your same routine but with little or no weight at all. If you are doing exercises only, cut back on the number of repetitions. This will at least stretch the sore muscles and help the healing process along.

Are you doing upper body one day and lower body the next or the same exercises everyday?

Our muscles need at least a days rest to heal and repair. Even when just toning them which is what you are doing.

Try and take one day of full rest from all exercises except 30 minutes of cardio - brisk walking, elliptical, bicycle, whatever. This will help the body heal and the soreness will diminish.

    Good luck.

If you have sore muscles then I suggest you take a break. It can be up to 2-3 days or even more if you still feel sore. Not exercising will NOT make you gain weight so, you don't have to worry about that. If you keep exercising while you're sore, you won't see much results. You really should take a break if you feel that sore. It will help and the next time you exercise after you're all good, you'll actually be looking forward to it because you'll miss it and will do GREAT and won't get bored that easily since you haven't exercised for a while.

I take 3 days off after lifting weights for 1 hour. I feel sore a little but, I do take walks in the morning since I love exercising too. You can do that if you'd like but, if it hurts a lot then I would suggest you just rest for a while. Good luck!

many schools of thought on this lisa..... many opinions...

but the bottom line is you have to fill a certain schedule of working out..... approximate 4-5 days a week of training..

your probably looking at 20- 30 mins of cardio 30- 40 mins if more fat burning is required

40- 60 mins of weight training

the thing is... the body cannot always be feeling great for each workout.... it just cannot.. soreness comes and soreness goes..., the key is.. as long as u are not working the same muscle each workout... each muscle should be worked 1-2 a week..

so saying that u can workout everyother day.... or u can workout monday - friday

just make sure u are eating sufficent protein and good diet

Lisa...I firmly believe that "no pain, no gain" will quickly lead to bigger pain and no gain. If you're hurting then give your body a chance to recuperate and recover from your exercise. More exercise can cause your body to produce cortisol (a stress hormone that can cause your body to store fat) in response to the greater stress that exercise can produce. Always give your muscle at least 24 hours to rest before working out again at intense levels.

Also, make sure that you're experiencing pain and not soreness. Soreness will be felt in the muscles and pain will generally be felt in joints. If it's soreness, cardio and stretching can take care of that. If it's pain, then let your body rest prior to possibly consulting your physician.

    Best wishes,

It is SUPPOSE TO HURT!!!!!... YES! when it hurts it's a sign that it is working, the reason why it hurts is because it is doing something that it has never done before...that is it's starting to actually work... the only way for it too stop hurting when you are doing exercise is to continue doing it until it stops and when it stops you do more, so it could start back hurting again... don't let your body get use to one thing. Why? because if it does, that means, you aren't exercising, you are not burning anything...what so ever... which means, there is no point on doing it!

    That's called vigorous exercise
