Do I have a fuel sensor problem?

I have a 1987 Buick LeSabre and I'm having a major problem with it. The car starts normally, but when you're driving the car stalls a lot, especially leaving from stop signs, red lights, etc. The car dies when you reduce speed to stop or to park and it takes longer than normal to restart it. After the car starts back up, there is a strong odor of gasoline mixed with something else, I can't make it out. There's also sparks flying out of the tailpipe when driving at night when the car does start to stall. I had a friend follow me home from college one evening and she called to let me know that sparks were coming out of the tail pipe. Advice I got was there may be a problem with the fuel sensor, but not sure where that is.

I've checked the spark plugs and they seem to be okay, and the wires that go to them. I've had the fuel pump replaced little over a year ago. I've recently changed the fuel filter 3 months ago. I just need some advice so I can go in the right direction to get my car running normally. It's the only vehicle we have.

I don't have a Buick dealership near me and no mechanic around me has a diagnostic machine to hook up to my car. If anyone needs additional information, I'd be willing to give it. I really do need some help/advice. Thanks!

Update:

Hey Jim... I went outside just now to tap on the air flow sensor, and it did exactly what you stated the car would do. I will assume that is the problem and I'll get it replaced.

Thanks to all for your quick advice and suggestions. I forgot to add that my car is fuel injected, doesn't have a carb.

Your fuel sensor is in your tank and measure the amount of gas that you have-it is not your problem, There are several possibilities, The Mass Air flow sensor sounds like the cause of your problems. Checking for "trouble codes" with a code reader can help narrow the search. Try with the engine idling to tap the Mass air flow sensor it is a black box located between your air filter and your throttle body, if your car stumbles or dies replace the sensor, also clean the throttle body with a rag and throttle body cleaner.

An 87 La Sabre liner is rear wheel drive, correct? If so, it does not have fuel sensors. It has a carburetor not injected. Is your fuel mileage awful? Take it to a garage, and have it fixed. A carburetortor is not user friendly.

  • the only fuel sensor in the vehicle is in the gas tank and that is a level indicator for the fuel level. it is also a throttle body efi. and with the 440t4 trans, it is a front wheel drive vehicle.

I believe your car is front wheel drive and carburated so you probably just need a complete tune-up and maybe a carb rebuild.

Probably running rich, either injectors are fouled or fuel regulator is defective.
