Retail stores like Best Buy and Wal-Mart don't carry any computers that are good for gaming right off the shelf, for that price. All of their gaming systems are more expensive. The low-cost computers they carry all have bad graphics cards (or none at all, just integrated graphics) and weak power supplies that can't handle major upgrades.

It's your computer's graphics card that primarily determines how smoothly games play. For example, look at the difference between various graphics cards perform.

    http://www.techspot.com/review/240-ati-radeon-hd-5...

The integrated graphics on low-cost Dell, HP, Sony etc computers are less than 1/3 the speed of the lowest card shown in the comparison (Radeon 4650).

You can buy a basic system from best Buy or Wal Mart, but to make it good for gaming you MUST upgrade it by adding a good graphics card (and possibly a power supply). You'd want to buy those items from online from Newegg or Amazon- Best Buy's prices on those components are 30-50% higher.

For example you could start with this:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Dell+Inspiron+I560-213...

    Then add this graphics card:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

So for less than $700 total, you'd be in good shape for those games. That same model of graphics card (GDDR5 GeForce GT240) costs $120 from Best Buy.

Or you can get this starting package:

    http://www.bestbuy.com/site/HP+Pavilion+p6644y+Spe...

    then add these:

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

    http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N8...

And you'd have a REALLY nice gaming computer, about twice as fast! Of course if you aren't familiar with how to install a new power supply, you'd need a friend who's good with computer hardware to help you, or have a computer shop do it. It only takes 5 minutes and a Phillips screwdriver so it's not worth paying $150 to Geek Squad for something that simple.

Another option is buying a CyberpowerPC gaming computer. For example, here's a $590 computer which can handle those games easily, it's better than the HP or the Dell. You'd need to buy your own monitor separately, but that's no biggie. Best Buy has decent prices on those, or get one online from Amazon or Newegg:

    Monitors:

    Good luck!

Here's what I would do--buy a quad-core desktop (I like AMD cpu's) from Newegg.com with 4 gigs of ddr3 ram and Windows7. Then buy a 460GTX video card at Newegg.com and install it yourself, it's easy really. You can email me if you need me to tell you how to install the video card.
