Spilled water on Macbook Pro; doesn't turn on, but still charges; any hope?

I spilled about 1/2 a 500ml bottle of water on my one week old Macbook Pro about an hour ago, right at the crease of the computer (it is a unibody) which then travelled to the keyboard. It turned off immediately and made a few weird sounds.

I immediately dried it, tried blowing the water off, shaking the computer up and down so the water could come out, blowdried it...everything. I tried turning it on time and time again (which I now know was a terrible idea) and it wouldn't turn on. It still charges though; the charger when plugged in lights up and so do the lights on the side of the computer. I know I shouldn't have plugged in the charger, but I did. Is this indicative of any hope?

I also know that taking the battery out is what I should do, but I don't have the right sized screwdriver.. any advice and/or opinions would be nice. Thanks.

Update:

I can't believe how many times I've tried to turn it on only to know I was the one frying it. Argh! Plus, plugging the charger in... another mistake. One week old guys, one week old! Anyway I'll be taking it in first thing tomorrow morning. I'm thinking I should purchase the AppleCare Protection Plan then claim it.

the charging process is separate from the "powering the computer" process. also, DON'T put it in rice, as so many have seemed to think it was a good idea. in theory, the rice will soak up the extra water, but then you'll have rice stuck to it (and rice can get INTO the tiniest cracks, trust me), and eventually, even if the MacBook DOES work, you start to smell a burning from within it.

also, it probably wasn't a good idea to run the blowdrier on it, as it emits positively charged ions (look it up) which can affect electronics in a negative way, possibly worsening your situation.

the best thing to have done (after drying off the MacBook) would've been to wait 24-48 hours for it to dry (leaving it in a warm area with plenty of fresh air), THEN trying to turn it on. air drying is the only safe drying method for computer components.

yeah, they don't cover things like this in a warranty of course, but you should definitely get some sort of protection plan with anything that expensive, especially if you are accident prone.

    good luck!

The battery is in a separate system than the main programing. The sounds you heard are probably a shorted circuit from the water and will need a professional advice on the extent of damage. Shop accordingly for a verified repairman, these may be more economical to buy a complete unit. Apple is a certified Corp. and they will give you a few suggestions to bring back operations if possible. The corporation also has a professional lab and will do repairs, and you must pay postage and costs other. That wouldn't be good to claim insurance when no policy was engaged before the accident, fraudulent claims will put you in the "pokey" and that's no JOKEY!

Take it to the Mac store, Luckily, it is still under warranty - although I do not know is it covers spilling water on it. No use crying over spilled water. The old rule about not drinkinking near a computer was a good one. Next time it happens, IMMEDIATELY shut down, unplug, and try to remove the battery. Water and electricity do not mix well if you want the organized use of electrons.

Forget the rice. Go directly to the closest apple store and see a genius. Or you can try Connecting Point Computers if you have one close by. If those two options are not available, try one of the other authorized Mac service providers before you do more damage or allow more damage to be done. Good luck.

You should have immediately unplug it, turned it off and not used for several days until dries out completely as the water can short out the mother board and other components making it just a good paper weight.

if its a macbook pro you dont need a screwdriver to take out the battery. or you could just go to apple to let them look at it and see if anythings wrong. put it in rice. i know it sounds stupid but that fixed my friend's apple electronics. yes there is probably hope. go to the apple store as soon as possible.

ohh, the water may have entered to the internal parts of MacBook. Keeping it in a bowl of rice would only dry it up from the outer surface. You must get it checked by some repair centre. check this repair centre in London, they carry years of experience in mac repairs https://www.macresponsecentre.co.uk/
