Is Indiana University of Pennsylvania (IUP) an ok place for a black person to be?

Seriously, is there a higher-than-average amount of racism there? I am thinking about going to this school, but I am concerned because I've never been to the west side of Pennsylvania. Anybody's input who went there, lives around the area, or knew someone that went, I would like your input.

Thanks.

I am an IUP Alumni, both my BS and MS from that school. I did not find it a racist town, instead a very accepting town and a univeristy full of people from around the world. That being said, there are some "stigmas" to deal with. It is in an "old" town -- the young people are mostly IUP students, while the townspeople are a an older generation. I think the stigma from the townspeople has nothing to do with color, and everything to do with townies vs the university. The town is full of good people, but ones who have been burned by drunk, incosiderate idiots who sadly, usually attend the college. But again, they are good people -- sometimes you just have to prove yourself :) The college has a strong "East vs West PA" rivalry, but 99% of it is all in fun. A ton of students from eastern PA attend IUP, creating a strong community of people for those coming in. I love love love IUP, and my time there was priceless. Good luck in your quest to find the university for you!

Well here are some facts<1% American Indian/Alaskan Native

    1% Asian/Pacific Islander

    10% Black/Non-Hispanic

    2% Hispanic

    83% White/Non-Hispanic

    1% Non-Resident Alien

    2% Race/ethnicity unreported

so I'm assuming that there isn't a lot of racism but I'm not sure. Research the city and visit so you can figure out if it's a good place for you. Good luck :)

I don't see why western PA would be anymore racist than east PA.
