How to solve for displacement? ?

How would you solve displacement for: If a person leaves their house and walks 102 m north, then turns and walks 78.0 m west, what is the (a) distance traveled and (b) total displacement? I don't get it.

    Easy.

    Draw a right triangle.

On the Y axis (Or the side pointing vertically) write 102m

On the X axis (The horizontal one) write 78.0m.

Then use trig to solve for the hypotenuse or the resultant. You could actually use pythagorams for this. A^2+B^2=C^2

    (102^2)+(78^2)=C^2
