By the way Michael ... The Huffington Post article didn't say atheists knew the Bible better but all religions in general.

Are you drunk. This is so deficient in comparison to your usual posts. Try harder next time, because you have a reputation to maintain.

Blessings to all. Morality is based upon what God commands. No other reasons are needed but that God so commanded it. If God commanded it, then it is right. If God forbids it, then it is wrong. so i think any one can read the Bible but one eyes and ears has to be open to grasp and perceive the things of God , and the main thing is to obey and do what God's expected from each person . One argument might be that in complex world with complex consequences if there are a set of competing theories (no need to consider non competing theories) and one is backed up by a super intelligent being - then, that is likely to be the only "functional" plan.

A christian/religious person could then claim moral superiority because it was simply implausible that anyone else would have considered even a fraction of the information required to deal with the side effects of their actions and thus are at a massive disadvantage.

Just like if you are a passenger in a plane the most important question is "does the pilot know how to fly" not "where does he want to go". And if you had to pick a pilot and if only one person knows how to fly - you would probably pick him.

I.e. gods plan is right for the most part due to omniscience as opposed to anything else. I like your question it sure made me think. Thanks God bless.

One needs to be literate to read - literacy rates in the world today are quite high - this is a recent development, thanks mainly to the USA and its public school doctrine at the founding of the nation, then the world with the spread of democracy after WW2. There were no public schools in the old kingdoms of Europe or the Roman Empire or even before then, only the wealthy were schooled .

as for 'smart people' - ALL wisdom comes from God - even Solomon knew that!

They were astonished at Jesus and said of Him, 'How did this man get such wisdom, never having studied?' Jesus knew ALL of scripture, all of it! even some that is not in the 'Law and Prophets'[Jn7:38,Lk11:49] even before He was at the house of God at age 12.

    How? - Jn1:1 & 3:11

Have you ever read the bible? Are you able to read?

If your question has ANY merit whatsoever -

Why are you denying yourself some type of intellectual superiority in not reading the bible?

Anyone can be smart. Even an illiterate person. Not all intellectuals believe in The Holy Scriptures or in a deity.

One has to have an open mind, some education, emotionally intelligent and avoid negative thinking before you are able to read between the lines.

I should say: with the guide of a Holy Spirit, a person will have more wisdom and wiser in decision making. Especially in reading the words of God, only Holy Spirit can reveals the best.

No, of course not. Christians may be illiterate and or innumerate. But they will have superior humility to smart, or dumb, atheists. The Bible says the fool has said in his heart (Heb. leb = moind) "There is no God".

Most North American atheists have read the bible, and if you think a person needs to be "smart" to do so, your standards are awfully low.

  • 1 decade ago

Actually, the more you actually read the bible, the more you realize how fundamentally flawed it is. There's a reason that atheists generally know the bible better than believers.

If reading a Bible passes for intellectualism in your neck of the woods, I'd hate to see what passes for "dumb".
