How does lowering a car affect it?

Hi, I'm driving a Nissan 100NX. The coil springs are corroded and need replacing... Only problem is stock springs have to come from Nissan in Japan and cost almost £700 :-/

But Apex lowering springs from euro car parts are available for about £100 for the set so I told my mechanic to go with those.

They lower the car by 30mm. How would this affect how my car handles? Is there anything to look out for or is 30mm not too much to make a difference?

Thanks all!

the centre of gravity is lower which may well increase the possible cornering speeds

the car will be harder sprung and may well be more uncomfortable on bumps.

it will tend to ground more easily over speed bumps and similar so you need to take them slower

tyre wear is likely to be increased.

In my personal expierience loweing by 30mm does not make a great deal of difference. Obviously sports springs are alot firmer than stock springs so ride quality will be affected, the car will usually handle a wee bit better. The only thing you will need to keep an eye on is your stock springs (Presuming you are using stock ones) as these will be constantly compressed 30mm more than usual which can lead to leaks. If you havnt got the springs yet you should really go for coilovers. Atleast then the components will be designed to work together and you can adjust to your liking.

It'll have a nice firm but fair ride, and it'll have a better stance. Insurance companies only care that the springs have been fitted properly. I declared a full body kit, springs, engine mods, interior mods, the lot, and the independent inspector just checked that it was all bolted on properly, and My insurance didn't increase.

Don't buy the Nissan springs buy pattern ones they are the same but a fraction of the price.

You will be stung by the insurers if you lower it.
