  • Ok to turn down job after accepting?

    Hi all,

I accepted a job from a company back in February and they held the position for me so I can start at the beginning of July. I accepted the position and signed the contract. But recently I've been 'headhunted' for a higher paying job with a much shorter commuting time (20mins compared to 1 hour 30 mins previously) which will let me spend a lot more time with my young family too.

I was wondering what you folks thought about me turning them down now? Are there likely to be any issues? Is it wrong/illegal for me to reject now after signing and sending off the contract? Its my first job so any help would be grateful.

    Thank you for reading :)

  • Living in chelmsford or witham?

Hi, I've got a job in Ipswich but would prefer to commute there than live there. Is Chelmsford a nice place to live in? I've considered Witham but it doesn't look like there's many shops so am worried I'd have to drive just to go to a Tesco/Sainsburys etc on the plus side I can afford a 4 bed house for myself in Witham :) a little too much lol

I hear a lot about 'chavs' when googling this and people getting attacked by them but seriously, I've lived in Hackney for the last 20 years (I'm 24) and have been attacked a total of 0 times. Seen plenty of violence there but have never really felt threatened. So please try compare Chelmsford/Witham with that in mind.

    Thanks a lot!

  • Need help receiving parcels...?

    Hi all, thanks for reading.

I'm a single guy, recently moved into my own place, working the usual 9-5.30 on the weekdays.

I was just wondering, what should I do about missing parcels? With Royal Mail, its usually possible to redeliver on a Saturday but I checked with DHL and they only work 'office hours' (lazy bums :P )

I tend to receive parcels with computer parts in them (personal projects..) that often need to be signed for. Would you folks have any suggestions? Some sort of external PO Box? Mail forwarding? Slave? :P

    Thanks folks!

  • What is media streaming exactly?

Hi all, I'm just wondering how you define media streaming... here's my situation.

I have a nettop running Windows XP with a nice RAID setup to store all my media files. Its in the same workgroup and all the media files are in a shared folder. To listen to music on my laptop or another PC, I just run Windows Media Player (personal preference, dont need suggestions on media players :P ) and load a playlist saved on the nettop's shared folder. To watch video, I browse to the file and run it.

I've been told this isn't streaming. I never said it was and it works fine for me but I was wondering what would count as streaming. Should all the audio/video processing be done at the server? What benefits does it have over the setup I'm currently using?

    Thanks all :)

  • P4 heatsink with C2D?

    Hi all,

    I have a core 2 duo processor (E8400) which has a TDP of 65W.

I also have an old heatsink lying around that came with my Prescott core Pentium 4 many years ago. That CPU had a TDP of 84W.

Would the heatsink and fan from the P4 cool the C2D even more efficiently? Both heatsinks are stock.

I only ask cos my current HSF is making very odd, loud noises so probably will die soon... Since I have one from the P4 lying around, would it make a decent heatsink for the C2D?

    Thanks for looking :)

  • Help cancelling RAC cover?

    Hello,

I bought RAC breakdown cover online from them nearly two years ago on my first car. Since then I've moved on to a different car and have breakdown cover with my insurance company.

I called to cancel my RAC cover which they said they did but then I received an automatic renewal notice and had the money taken from my account. Called them up and asked, WTH man? They said sorry and promised to cancel and refund me. But then it happened again! I just got another renewal notice today and the money had been taken from my account. Oh and I never got the refund from the last time either :-/

Anyway, is there any way I can prevent them from doing it again? I dont want to do something drastic like switch to a different bank altogether....

    Thanks for your time

  • Distributed vs Cluster computing?

I was just wondering, whats the difference between distributed computing and cluster computing?

They both can run over a network connection such as Gigabit Ethernet but is there a difference or are they basically the same thing?

And please, no wikipedia copy and pastes, I've already looked there :P

    Thanks!

  • Is it ok to drive a car I just bought?

Hi all, I'm picking up a used car tomorrow. It has MOT, will be taxed by the seller before I pick it up and I will have insurance just before I drive it. But cos I'd just have bought the insurance, it wouldn't appear on askmid immediately. Is it still nice and legal for me to drive it or will the police not be too happy about it if they stop me??

I have to pick up the car tomorrow, seller sorta made it clear he doesn't want it on his driveway after tomorrow and none of my friends with fully comp insurance are able to pick it up for me...

  • Honda CRX or Mitsubishi FTO...?

Hiya folks, just about to get myself a new (used) car next month and am torn between the FTO and CRX... They both look good lol

The CRX (UK spec with electric roof) has some good reviews on it but then so does the FTO... they cost around the same (car+insurance is pretty much equal).

A manual FTO is almost impossible to find lol so there's one mark against it. The CRX is a strict two seater so that's one against that... If you had to pick, which would you go for?? :)

  • What happens to my insurance if I change my car?

Hi, sorry if this question is very basic but I've never done this before lol

So I'm insured (Third party fire and theft) but in about 2-3 months, I'm hoping to change cars. At the time, I'll be about 5-6 months in to my insurance policy. If I change cars then, what happens to my no claims bonus? Can I just change the car on the policy and 6 months down the line, rack up another NCB (I drive less than 500 miles a year so hopefully no crashes)?

Or does it reset the clock so to speak so that I need to go another full year?

    Thanks all!!

  • Mountain bike became tougher to pedal?

Has anyone encountered this before? My bike used to ride nicely, gliding pretty well. But for some reason, its become much harder to pedal. Heck, I actually have to pedal to move it on a small downhill slope (when I first got it, it used to just glide down by itself on the very same slope)...

Its started screwing up after I repaired a puncture (took the wheel off) but I've taken a look at it many times since, I still cant find where the excess resistance is coming from... My chain's gone a little rusty too since I haven't used it in a while now (due to the resistance problem). Would some WD40 on the chain fix that?

Any help is greatly appreciated :) thanks all!

  • How does lowering a car affect it?

Hi, I'm driving a Nissan 100NX. The coil springs are corroded and need replacing... Only problem is stock springs have to come from Nissan in Japan and cost almost £700 :-/

But Apex lowering springs from euro car parts are available for about £100 for the set so I told my mechanic to go with those.

They lower the car by 30mm. How would this affect how my car handles? Is there anything to look out for or is 30mm not too much to make a difference?

    Thanks all!

  • Change of adress problems...?

    Hello all,

My insurance is due for renewal (next two weeks). I've moved house and updated my address with the DVLA. But I forgot to update my V5C so officially the car is still registered to my parents' place I'm guessing. I'd renew it right away except my road tax renewal date is also coming up and since they say it could take 4 weeks for the V5C to return, that might cause me trouble :(

Would it affect the insurance folks if I leave the V5C update til after my road tax is renewed or will they claim insurance fraud? Cos this is the cheapest insurance quote I've found so really dont wanna mess it up... Thanks all!

  • How Free is the MOT Retest?

The two sections below are taken straight from http://www.mottesting.org.uk/mot-retest-informatio...

Can someone tell me what happens if the MOT repairs take longer than 10 days. Do I pay full MOT test fees again? Thanks!

If your vehicle fails it's MOT test and is left at the station it was originally tested in to be repaired, then no additional fee is charged for a retest. This is known as a Partial Re-Examination or Partial Retest.

Your re-test will only be free if the vehicle is left with the original MOT testing station for repair and then a partial re-test is carried out within 10 working days of the original MOT test.

  • Insurance and car scrappage, new driver help pls?

    Hi all,

I'm so close to getting my first year no claims discount. I assume it'll be in February when my current insurance policy expires.

Slight problem though... my car needs a lot of work done now to get it to pass the MOT (or so the Halfords mechanic says). The MOT expires at the end of January. I was thinking of dumping my car, selling it for a pittance or whatever, you know, basically getting off my hands before or on the day the MOT expires.

Would I have to tell my insurance guys that I no longer own the car or can I just shut up for two weeks and tell them when they ask me to renew? That way I figure I'd get my 1 year NCD...

Any help would be great, thanks!

  • Do you prefer a desktop or laptop for intensive tasks?

I've read a lot of questions where people are asking about gaming laptops etc I was wondering what everyone's opinions on this was.

If you want a gaming system, would you prefer a laptop or desktop?

I'd prefer desktop all the way lol laptops are portable and as such I only use mine for less intensive tasks. But when it comes to serious stuff (work or play) I always prefer a desktop. Not only that but laptops aren't really portable enough for me :P Netbooks are just about ok but as you know, they're not serious computing devices.

So whats your take on this whole desktop/laptop business? Which would you prefer for intensive computer use??

  • Going from Pentium 4 to Pentium D?

    Hi all,

I was just wondering if anyone had any info on this. Basically, I wanna change a Pentium 4 HT processor with a Pentium D. But would this require an upgraded CPU cooling systm cos the Pentium D is supposed to run hotter (currently, using the stock fan)? And what about power consumption? Would I need a better power supply (currently have a 400W PSU)?

I know its old hardware and most of you will probably tell me to chuck it and get a new PC altogether but I already have a nice enough Core 2 Quad setup. This is for a little side project I'm working on. Thanks for all your help :)

  • IDE or SATA, which would you go with?

Here's my situation. My motherboard hasone IDE connector and 4 SATA connectors. There's a DVD drive on the IDE connector already and an 80 GB SATA hard drive on one of the SATA ports.

I have a 320 GB IDE drive lying around. I could either use that and do a master/slave setup on the one IDE cable with the DVD drive or I could get a new SATA hard drive lol

Would I notice much of a performance hit? SATA is at 150 MB/s, IDE at 133 so probably not so much but maybe when both drives are running, IDK...

What would you do? Buy a bigger SATA drive or just stick in the IDE drive?

    Thanks for your opinions :)
