Living in chelmsford or witham?

Hi, I've got a job in Ipswich but would prefer to commute there than live there. Is Chelmsford a nice place to live in? I've considered Witham but it doesn't look like there's many shops so am worried I'd have to drive just to go to a Tesco/Sainsburys etc on the plus side I can afford a 4 bed house for myself in Witham :) a little too much lol

I hear a lot about 'chavs' when googling this and people getting attacked by them but seriously, I've lived in Hackney for the last 20 years (I'm 24) and have been attacked a total of 0 times. Seen plenty of violence there but have never really felt threatened. So please try compare Chelmsford/Witham with that in mind.

Thanks a lot!

Chelmsford certainly has more to offer in the way of shops, pubs/bars, supermarkets, places to eat and a cinema. Witham does have a big tescos and morrisons so you wont starve! I'd check out houses in Chelmsford and see what you can afford and visit too if you havent already. Plus look for things that interest you for eg a gym, clubs etc and choose whichever one has more to offer.

Chelmsford is the larger place and also the county town (and has just been given city status) so there are going to be more facilities and more going on there than in Witham, which is quite a bit smaller. There will also be more direct trains from Chelmsford to Ipswich if you plan to travel that way rather than driving. You might also look at Colchester - larger than Witham with a large university presence, nearer to Ipswich, with even better rail links than Chelmsford, and with a lot more history to it than either place - it's England's oldest town, founded by the Romans.
