How Free is the MOT Retest?

The two sections below are taken straight from http://www.mottesting.org.uk/mot-retest-informatio...

Can someone tell me what happens if the MOT repairs take longer than 10 days. Do I pay full MOT test fees again? Thanks!

If your vehicle fails it's MOT test and is left at the station it was originally tested in to be repaired, then no additional fee is charged for a retest. This is known as a Partial Re-Examination or Partial Retest.

Your re-test will only be free if the vehicle is left with the original MOT testing station for repair and then a partial re-test is carried out within 10 working days of the original MOT test.

If you have your vehicle tested at one garage, it MUST return there for retest. If you take it elsewhere, they MUST carry out a full inspection, and you WILL be charged.

It all depends on the nature of the failed items as to what you pay and what the time limits are. Also, consider that it is in fact 10 WORKING days, therefore discounting Weekends and bank holidays, you get quite a bit of time around this time of year. If for instance it failed on a blown bub and a cut tyre, the retest is very simple, and because no major components have been dismantled, it gets a "fast-track" retest, as it takes little time to check these components. This is normally a FREE retest, but only if re-presented within the agreed time. If, on the other hand, it failed on a leaking steering rack and imbalanced brakes, and an emissions fault, it would require a full retest due to the nature of the work that has been carried out (a lot of dismantling, affecting steering and braking components) and this would all need to be thoroughly checked. Brake efficiency readings are required, and an emissions test needs to be carried out. You MAY be charged for this kind of retest. But this is not a hard and fast rule.

If the MOT test garage carry out the repairs necessary and it takes them 10 days to do them, then you would not be expected to pay the fee again.

If you take it to another garage and they take the 10 days then the original test station could and probably would make the full charge.

A little bit of negotiation might help in getting the fee reduced.

you do not have to go back to the same garage who did the first mot within 10 days for free retest, you can go anywhere but you need to take your failure sheet with you and need to prove u have had the work done.

if you do not retest within the 10days you are charged for a full test price again, the partial retest is at the garages discretion
