I am getting a small tattoo (about 2 inches x 1 inch) on my ankle, mostly black, a fairly simple treble clef. about how long do you think I will have to hold out the pain?

The outline, probably less than 20 minutes.
The colouring could take up to 15 minutes.
Nothing long at all.
Your tattoo artist will be able to give you a better estimation because they are in control of the time. Some work faster than others and some work slower than others.
The pain won't be unbearable, you'll make it.
