No, it is not okay to smoke around your bird, for the reasons you have already stated. The risks are high, which include respiratory problems and death. Birds are incredibly sensitive creatures and cannot handle the stress of such air pollutants. My ex-best friend's bird died within two weeks of being adopted by her family because her entire family smoked indoors.

Actually the coal on top just heats up what you are smoking it's not what it being smoked. What you are smoking it most likely this stuff i can't remmber the name of but it is a tabacco product thought not very strong. It has very little tabacco actually in it and it therefor has less nicoteen. Also if you get a buzz from smoking it it's not from the nicoteen. If you smoke a lot of it the affects can be similar to that of a light ciggarette smoker. It is highly filtered thought so i wouldn't really worry abotu smoking it unless you are doinging it very frequently.

Dense smoke, less dense smoke? Are you kidding? Birds have tiny lungs, any smoke is harmful but won't kill them fast. Just like in humans, the bird's health will simply deteriorate over time and it will live a shorter life that is also less healthy.

Normally when people breath in smoke they are taken to the hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. Even rescue squads now carry special oxygen devices for animals. Tobacco smokers, in the beginning of their hobby of smoking, have simply managed to get their brain to over-ride the feeling that inhaling smoke is painful. Simple.

Smoke of any description no matter how little and how dense is dangerous to birds.

As an example more birds die through smoke inhalation of forest or any wildfire than,what actually die with the fire itself.as they can be overcome long before the actual fire reaches them

If you cared for the bird, move it. If you don't care for the bird, leave it. I highly suggest the first option.
