Can condoms break while having sex?

I was going to have sex for the first time (I'm fifteen) and was wondering if condoms could break. My girlfriend's using birth control pills but just to be safe...

Yes- condoms can break. They are pretty durable but like any mechanical device they are subject to breaking. Latex condoms have a break rate of about 0.4% which is not very high. However, people with less experience using them are more likely to break them. They are also more likely to break if there is a lot of friction (not well lubricated). This can be solved by using a WATER based lubricant. I do not think you need to be worried about her getting pregnant if the condom breaks due to her being on birth control. However, if you are worried about STI's this could be a problem. You and your partner should discuss getting tested if it is needed. In conclusion, you and your girl friend seem to be on the right path and have thought about prevention methods. I am sure you will not run into any major problems.

Yes condoms can break. But if you put them on correctly there is less chance. Most condom have a little reservoir that holds the ejaculation. If you just roll the condom on to your penis you should be fine. But if you try and pull the condom flat against the opening in your penis, you are stretching the condom unnecessarily. And this may cause the condom to break during intercourse.

Oh, yes, condoms do break... and often!! They are not 100% fool-proof. Many children were born as a "surprise" because of a broken condom.

It's only my opinion, but 15 is pretty young to have sex. You don't even know what you are doing or what the equipment is for!! You'll be sorry.... I'm just saying.

Yes, but it is highly unlikely, if the condom is new/fresh, and used properly.

With regular intercourse, the failure rate is VERY low. Condoms break with rough handling, teeth, rubbing against rough items, finger nails, etc..

Take a condom and fill it with water in the shower. Look at how much they can stretch. It takes a lot to break one when just having intercourse.. She'd have to have a sand paper vagina to break it!

All condoms can break, and what brand you get depends on how soon it might break, if it does.
