Is it safe to travel in Australia?

I realize Australia is in a state of emergency at the moment with all the flooding. I was planning on a backpacking trip there in May for a few months, and was wondering if it's still a good idea even if I were to avoid Queensland.

75% of Queensland is flooded, don't know how the situation will be in May but everything will not be cleaned up yet, most of the water will probably be gone but there might still be some stuff to clean up. Such a shame, QLD is the best state.

In May the Floods would have dried up and hopefully all roads open. It is the dry season then. We are in the wet season until april . The terrible devastation here has blocked many roads and it will take a long time to put things right. I'm on The Gold Coast Queensland and we are fine here . No floods for us.

Of course its always safe backpacking in Australia, plenty to see without going to Queensland, but I'm sure if any area unsafe you would not be allowed through by police.

Australia is a continent. Your question is like asking: "There are floods in New Orleans, is it safe to travel to the United States?"

There are huge areas that are unaffected by the flood.

Chances are by May we'll have bushfires and drought.
