What to do about possible blood in my dogs stool?

My 3 year old Chihuahua woke up this morning with a sour stomach, she had 3 bowel movements (they were diarrhea) I did not see the first 2 as a housemate cleaned them up but she stated there was blood in them. I did see the 3rd. It does have a red mucous like material in it, but not a large amount. Her stomach is making noise and since then she has one additional bowel movement (runny still) that did not have any red material in it.

Other than that and the fact that she does not have an appetite (she ate last night but not this morning) she seems fine, she is alert, bright eyed, gums are pink, she has saliva and her belly is not tender to the touch.

I guess my question is what to do, should I monitor this for the rest of the afternoon and see how she is doing in the A.M? or should I rush off to the vet? I am a good dog owner but my vet sucks, I didn't find out about the issue into 11a.m. and they close at 11:30-2:00 (it is walk in only) and re-open from 2-5 this was the worst possible day as I have a job interview at 4p.m. so there is no time to take her now and I won't be able to make it after.

The only other choice would be going to a vet that is open later or an emergency vet, but honestly if she isn't likely to get sicker during the night I'd rather play it out and see how she is in the A.M. What do you think I should do? And has this ever happened to anyone else? If so what was the cause?

Update:

I forgot to add this is a regular occurrence when she is about to go into heat, minus the possible blood. She often has no appetite, diarrhea and even some vomiting for a couple days.

Update 2:

Thanks for all the quick answers. I agree she needs to go and I will take her. I am now just trying to figure out if it is the type of thing that may wait until morning if I see no more red material (BTW, I cannot actually confirm it is blood, it is just a streak of burgundy, ironically her treats are the same color) but it is runny and *sorry gross* slimy. I did call the vet and just like any Dr. they just said to bring her in, they would not advise me over the phone if I could wait until morning. I really hope no one think I am a bad pet owner, the job interview is only important as I haven't gotten one in nearly a year and it is really important I make it, but if I in anyways thought my dog was too ill I would forget about it and take care of her.

Update 3:

Also she is on Sentinel heart worm pills that also protect against worms, she has never missed a dose in 2 years, does anyone know if they protect against all worms or just some?

I would be very careful. Blood in the stoole could be many dangerous things. I would watch her closely and if she continues bring her tonight. If not make a appointment for a checkup. Even know its gross it would be easier and lest costly if you brought in a sample of her stoole so they don;t have to get it.

Blood in a dogs stool is obviously never a good thing. Has she had all of her vaccinations? Could she have gotten into anything she wasn't supposed to? It could very well be a parasite which commonly causes blood/mucous in a stool. I would take her to the vet as soon as possible so they can get a fecal sample to test her. Make sure she is getting enough fluids since a dog with diarrhea can dehydrate very quickly!

On occasion my GSD will get an upset stomach and also diarrhea but if there was bloody mucus I would say take her to a vet along with stool sample as soon as you can. If it gets worse then you will need to take her to an Animal ER. Have always had my dogs spayed or neutered so have no idea if this has anything to go with coming in heat but wouldn't think so.

If it's a small amount of blood on top of the stool it could be something as small as a rectal tear. If the blood came out before the stool it could be a sign of hook or whipworm. If the blood is combined or inconsistent it could be giardia. Your vet should be able to do a fecal exam to determine the exact problem.

I can not give a diagnosis over the internet, only a vet can examine your dog and determine the problem. Its possible she may have eat a bone or something that is causing this problem. Keep a close check on her and take her in tomorrow AM. If she continues to pass any blood during the evening then take her to the emergency room. Actually many things can cause this including worms.

Good luck to your dog and your job interview.

This condition needs to be assessed by a vet and there is no other alternative. If you cannot find a vet who will help you by entering into a payment plan, contact your local shelter and ask if they are able to assist you in finding a vet who will help you, either for free or by entering into a payment plan, or if they know of any organizations that can assist you pay for the vet. Explain the circumstances, that you love your dog like one of the family and really don't want to give her/him up, but have encountered unexpected financial difficulties and would really appreciate some help. Also you might contact your church and asked your pastor/minister, etc. if there is any chance they could help you with this vet bill. I hope it all works out.

I would call the vet when they open up again and ask if they would consider it an emergency. You can probably wait until the morning, as long as she is still drinking a lot of water and not getting dehydrated. Definitely bring a stool sample with you so they can do tests.

When there is blood present in diarrhea, it can indicate coccidia or giardia. A vet visit is definitely a good idea. When this happened with my dog, they put her on a bland diet for several days (rice and boiled chicken) after a short fast to clear her system. The vet also gave her a probiotic chew and a broad spectrum antibiotic to cover any possible overgrowth of micro-organisms (such as coccidia). hope this helps!

When we first got our Finn she was a complete mess. She had been returned by a couple of families before us. She jumped, she barked, she peeed but after we found MyDogontheweb.com and followed the guide she is now brilliant. Love her!!!
