Should he be held responsible? Ipod broken. ?
My classmate couldn't take a joke, or he doesn't know his own strength. I said something about his hair jokingly and he caught me off guard when he came from my side and shoved me almost knocking me off balance. My two day old 4th gen iPod touch, in my hoodie pocket as it always is, flies out and lands face first, cracking much of the bottom left of the glass. It still functions. Now, he initially said to my face right after that he would pay for it, but I tried to talk to him on facebook and he (presumably) blocked me. I wasn't able to see him today. So if he opts out of paying for a new screen, is he still responsible for the damage? What should I say?

It was a non-malicious accident causing incidental damage made worse by you not having the said ipod in a secure place about your person. The other party is in my opinion only 50% to blame at most and should only share the cost of repair with you..You should once the item is repaired ,seek accidental insurance for the ipod in case of future accidents of similar nature.
If you reverse the rolls and consider would you pay for the repair of the ipod in a similar situation it may shed the incident in a different light for you.

He attacked you and broke your property in the process. No matter how you dice it, he was in the wrong. He had the option of taking the high road and not retaliating against your remarks about his hair. But he chose not to and now he must pay for it. This is why we're taught to turn the other cheek, because if you seek revenge, things can turn out worse for you.

Of course, tell him your suing him unless he pays
Since he pushed you, you may be even able to get more out of it too
Accident or not, it still happened. He should not have pushed you. It's still assault and he still broke your property.
Don't go to your principle. If anything, you could get in trouble yourself just for being in a fight like situation. They won't do anything.
"Not having the said ipod in a secure place about your person"...it's his own property. Where the hell is he supposed to put it, it's an ipod? According to the law, it would be the person who shoved hims fault.

legally any time anyone invades your personal area such as he did and property damage occurs that person is liable for any damages. i would bring it up to him in class and if he doesn't own up then its up to you weather or not you want to pursue this, to start you will probably have to get a police report and should anyway if it has to go to court its best to have that.(and next time i wouldnt make comments even as jokes to unstable people)

Yes he's responsible because he said he would pay for it. Hopefully there were witnesses around to prove what he said (unless you're lying).

Think about this, pretend you were him, would you pay for it? To me it was an accident and it would be a nice thing for him to do if he paid for it but he doesn't have to.

He should at least share the expense of the replacement
Legally I don't know but morally it is the right thing to do
