Why do people now-a-days think that spanking their child is bad?

Because parents would rather be best friends, than be a parent. Best friends don't spank.

Well, that's a bit of a stereotype, not ALL people "nowadays" think spanking is bad. The majority of parents, about 70 percent, actually still spank their children.
But I don't think anything is wrong with the people who are against it. Just as long as they aren't rude and don't go around insulting and putting down parents who do spank. I say if they take the time to discipline their kids in other ways successfully, more power to them. I'm not one to say that spanking is wrong or abusive, but I also think that it should be avoided as much as possible, and if you do use it, it should be a last resort. So I think it's great if parents are able to raise their kids without spanking.

Not "everyone" thinks that spanking bad---it's just one of those heated topics. Spanking and non-spanking parents are going to debate this until the end of time just like stay at home moms and working moms.

I don't know, perhaps it's because those people were beaten as children and think that they might wind up abusing their child if they take to striking them in any way.
I was spanked, I do not consider myself abused, and under certain circumstances I might spank my own child, tho not on the regular or anything.

Because it is, it doesn't teach the child why their behavior was bad, it just teaches them to fear there parents. Time outs and taking privileges away works much better as a form of discipline then spanking does and actually makes the children think about what they did and then they can learn from it, and they don't have the fear of being hit.
Kids should learn to do the right thing because it's the right thing, not because they are afraid of being hit.

Because people are starting to have common sense that spanking doesn't work and that assaulting children is wrong.

There has been a lot of research done that proves the harmful effects of spanking. Just 10 years ago it was all about "tough love" now it's been proven that a more nurturing parenting style is actually better. That's why "attachment parenting" has gotten so popular. You still need to be consistent with discipline, but it doesn't have to be all about punishment, but more about teaching. You get more positive results from positive parenting. You can have a good, well mannered child without beating them into submission.

most of this may come from the parents that were spanked as a child and thought it was evil to do and didn't want to do that to their kids..

i was spanked and the emotional pain is far worse than the physical pain. that wore off but i still look back at the faces my dad made and he looked like a monster. it wasnt child abuse cus it didnt lave a significant mark but i will never make my child (in the future) respect me out of fear that i will lash out at them.. spanking is stupid if your gonna teach your kdi that violence is never the answer hahahaha and teaching them hitting people is wrong.. that would be such a hypocrit.
spanking is honestly just a resource parents use when theyre not creative or smart enough to find another method
