Are African Americans a mixed race group?

I'm going through an identity crisis right now because I see myself as Black, but many people I meet seem to think I'm mixed or something. My dad is multiracial but doesn't that still make me just like many other African Americans?? So I'm just "Black" then, right?? Thats what I've always been but I still meet people who ask what I'm mixed with a lot, the last girl who asked me thought I was at least half Middle Eastern! That was weird, but others have thought I was half Filipino, half French, and other things. It gets annoying to me. ALL African Americans here are technically "mixed" to some degree? So I'm just African American and just Black. Right?

If you compare African Americans to some others, like Haitians then as a group its two different looks!

Update:

Then why don't people here identify more as a mixed race group?

Update 2:

@polkadots: It matters to me because I'm trying to figure out what I am...

Update 3:

When I say my dad is multiracial I really mean it literally, he has light blu/g eyes, light brown hair, mixed features, his skin is naturally pretty light but he has a sailboat, lol so hes goldish tan. You cannot tell which one race he is. So for me it makes me look "different" I guess... idk.

In fact, Black Americans are a mix of several ethnicities from Western Africa.

Also, a lot of Black Americans have some Native American Indian heritage.

And all the Black Americans have at least 15% of White Anglo-Saxon ancestry (because of the slavery times)

So, to answer your question, yes, African Americans are mixed.

"I'm just African American and just Black. Right?"

What is African American and Black? African American and black are the same race. Yes, Black Americans do have a admixture in their blood but they're still black.

"If you compare African Americans to some others, like Haitians then as a group its two different looks!"

That's false and you must have not seen all Haitians. I'm Nigerian. People think that I'm Black American. Yes, people look different because people have different features but you can't tell differences sometimes. Just by looking at someone you can't tell what they are. There has been occasions when I mistakened some Nigerians ad Black Americans.

To Prince: You are definitely not attractive, so shush. There are better looking "full Black" females than you think.

Now, I am an African American girl like you! Often, I am mistaken to be "directly mixed" like half white, half black. But I am not directly...but I have French, Swedish, Cherokee Native, and all that jazz in me as well in my family anestry. There are different colors and shades of Blacks with different hair types so I hate it when people stereotype "light skinned" blacks as directly biracial simply only due to hair texture and skin tone. But back to the point!

Yes, technicially African Americans are "mixed." Probably most have European ancestry due to rape and such between the masters and slaves mostly. But I learned that Oprah herself does NOT have European blood. She is mostly of African descent, Native American and South Asian, which was interesting. But most times, European is definitely present in the blood of quite a few Black Americans. Native American also appear in the blood tests for some Black Americans.

There was a report that it is RARE to find a black person who is ABOVE 80% of African descent, meaning many are under that percentage in the US. So, basically, African Americans are of mixed heritage just like Puerto Ricans-- (they are of African, Taino, and Spanish Anestry I believe).

I sometimes find myself in that identity crisis but then I get over it. I am who I am. It's not what you are, it's who you are that counts! Please remember that!

It depends on how mixed you are. Most African Americans are mixed to some extent. Most Americans (of any race) whose families have been in this country for generations, are mixed to some extent - Whoopi Goldberg and Oprah both have non-black ancestry. I have non-black ancestry too, but both my parents are black, so I'm black.

1/3 of white Americans has black ancestry and an even larger percent has Native American ancestry. It's been estimated that about 80% of black americans has white ancestry.

Truth be told it depends on who you ask , but all in all most of us are not mixed we in general are just diverse like africans are you see when you listen these to people who are not even black tell you about us its just arrogance . in there world just about every black woman was raped and had mixed children but this is not the case in reality. they think because some of us are copper-colored we must be diluted or something. it just is a sales pitch in this whole rainbow rhetoric people cant seem to get over these days

    So I'm mix race?

    Sweet

MOST people in this world are mixed with something whether they know it or not. With all the European exploration and mingling with Native Americans and African slaves most people in diaspora have some variation of white, black, or native american blood. Not all but most and yes it includes blacks.

African Americans are a group of multi-racial black people, so saying you're "just black" or "just AA" implies a degree of race mixing already to me.

"Then why don't people here identify more as a mixed race group?"

What do you mean by that?
