99 Jeep Cherokee sport, 4.0L, do you have to pull the engine to change the oil pump?

My oil pump went out on my cherokee sport, no oil pressure. No oil flowing in the valve cover. My buddy/mechanic is saying that the engine has to be pulled to get the oil pan removed. Is that true? I know you have to drop the pan to get to the oil pump, but do you really have to pull the engine to do it?

    two schools of thought here.

1, crack a mount and raise the engine,

2, or study the pump pickup tube mounting from the manual, drop the pan, and pull the pump pickup tube blind, let it drop into the pan, slide pan and all out. then replace the pump. reverse procedures to install.

some times you might decide to do both. depends on how much clearance you have.

i prefer to drop the pu tube if i can get away with it, as re-aligning motor mount bolts can be a PITA.

obviously you will be the one to determine what's easiest.

a FREE online manual can be found at,

just sign up, plug in you're vehicle info, and go to, "repair info".

    cheers!

If it's paid for and you can't afford a new car opt to have this engine replaced, if you only replace the oil pump you are playing on a one-hole golf course because you will have more expensive problems later. Some rebuilders will back their work with a 3 year/50,000 mile warranty. Yes the engine does have to be removed and it doesn't take that much longer to do it right than to short-cut the job by leaving it inside.

no you don,t have to pull the engine. all you might have to do is loosen the motor mounts and raise the engine so the oil pan will clear.

  • it can be done with the engine in the vehicle but it is not an easy task.
