Is there any acting work for American actresses in England?

At this time I am living in Chicago, I am moving to England in a couple months due to my fathers job. I'm 18 and have been acting for a few years, but I haven't done anything major thus far. I know that Skins has open casting calls every couple of years for a new generation, but I want to know if becoming a more serious actress in England will be a problem, due to my American accent. Will there be roles that require an American accent, or will I have to fake a British one?

Update:

I already have European Union citizenship which allows me to legally live and work in the UK, I DO NOT need advice on how to get the papers, I just need to know whether my American accent would hold me back from getting roles.

You will need a work permit to work in the UK if you're not already a British citizen. You may also need a visa if you wish to reside in the UK for longer than a few months. Contact the British Embassy in your country to find out what you need to do do to live/work in the UK.

I can only really state the obvious - if you can't do a convincing English accent, you'd find yourself limited to roles where an American accent was either needed or acceptable. Although there may well be some roles like this which your agent could find for you, it is going to be a small percentage of the total.

If you have a good resume/CV and have had proper training and a lot of experience, you should be able to get Equity membership, which you'll need, and perhaps an agent. Agents are very hard to get here, because there are so many qualified actors they can pick and choose. Most would want to see you perform in a public theatre in a medium or major role before they'd take you on.

If you've not been to a good drama school and have no professional experience, you won't get an agent at all.

Another thing to consider is that most English professional actors can do a convincing American accents (as well as dozens of local accents) so this is going to limit your chances of getting roles requiring that.

There are hardly ever any genuine open auditions here. Most which are advertised are scams - publicity stunts. The real ones are rare, and then there will be thousands of new and experienced actors lining up at the door. Competition is fierce!

    Good luck.

as you know America like the whole of uk is struggling due to the credit crunch, jobs are all difficult to find, get and keep the now. it depends what you are going for although it it best to sign up to an agency right away so you can get work. it would be nice to hear a real American accent on british tv cause tv programs like BBC soap Eastenders have been known to fake it, i dont think your accent will hold you back cause tv company's are crying out for Americans to join shows but what as an actress you just need to be believable and make the role your own, thats all we ask. good luck
