Can you remove furniture stain?

I have a pine bureau that I bought unfinished. I stained it with a black stain (8 years ago) but would like to get the stain out and restain it a lighter color. Possible or not?

I think in your case I'd start out using a liquid stripper to get the bold amount of stain off. This will allow you to sand it down to bare wood by hand much easier. After stripping I'd start out with a 100/150 grit sandpaper , then move to a 220 grit for a smooth finish.
