Duty free shopping..?

I don't understand what duty free shopping is..! Why do people get so excited about it?? Is everything a lot cheaper?? If so, by how much?? A dollar or 2 or a significant amount?? What does 'duty free' mean and why is it cheaper then buying things elsewhere?!

Thanks!:)

There is a BIG price difference depending on what you buy.

It just depends how high the government tax is on certain items.

    For example..............

A $200 camera, usually sold in stores might have $10 government tax on it. So at duty free, you get to buy it at $190 instead.

    but

If your buying cigarettes, they are taxed more by the government. So a $100 carton/box of cigarettes , which usually gets sold in a store for that price, would have something like $30-$40 tax on it.

In duty free you could buy it at $60.

So there is a big saving on things like alchohol and tobacco. At the same time, there is a limit on how much you can purchase.

And you can only purchase at duty free if you are travelling overseas and or returning from overseas. You need to show your passport and airline ticket.

Duty Free shopping is basically tax free shopping. These duty free shops are placed at international airports and only international travellers can buy the products. The products at duty free are much cheaper than you'd get anywhere else, depending on the product. Items like liquor, cigarettes, perfumes, chocolates are most common categories sold there which usually have high taxes. Chocolates don't have much tax difference but the pack size of these chocolates at duty free are way bigger than you'd get anywhere. So the savings are bigger. And most importantly, duty free shops stock a lot high-end luxury brands, exclusive finest brands in the above categories which you may or may not always find in regular retail formats.

On a military post there is duty free shopping at the base x-change. There realy isn't to much of a price difference where where proffit and taxes are concerned, the products quality and choice may be affected, but basicaly, it's a coin toss.
