Both you and your passenger must have valid passports to enter Canada.
You must then make a reservation for customs at your airport of entry in Canada and both you and the passenger must go through customs.
If you are flying a US Registered aircraft and land in Canada, you must purchase in advance a Canadian Radio License.

You have to file a flight plan with the country your flying into before they shoot you out of the sky.
And yes you have to go through Customs with a passport and all, it's just a few people at small airports that come and meet you at the plane.
