My 2002 Accord v6 doesn't run well in cold weather?

It takes at least 20 to 30 minutes before the car will drive normally. It's an automatic, but it behaves like it doesn't have first gear when I'm starting from a standstill. It will groan and take about a block to reach 15 to 20 mph, then kick into second gear and do fine. The check engine light and the traction control system lights are both on whenever the car is cold. I had it checked out last winter, and the mechanic just said that the car was cold. I just don't think it should take 20 minutes of warming up for my car to drive. Is there anything that can be done for it?

If the Check Engine light is on, there should be something in the fault recorder. Ask your mechanic to check that. The symptoms you describe could have a number of reasons. A faulty thermostat is one possibility (and not unlikely).

If your mechanic insists that the car is 'just cold', find another mechanic.

Sounds to me like your thermostat is stuck open or not installed. If you had overheating issues in the past it is likely that it was removed. If not then it needs to be replaced. At any rate, if it is not intalled--install one. You can take it a shop, but this repair should be easy on your car. I was an auto shop manager and certified tech for 6 years, I am confident that this should resolve your issue.
