  • My 2002 Accord v6 doesn't run well in cold weather?

It takes at least 20 to 30 minutes before the car will drive normally. It's an automatic, but it behaves like it doesn't have first gear when I'm starting from a standstill. It will groan and take about a block to reach 15 to 20 mph, then kick into second gear and do fine. The check engine light and the traction control system lights are both on whenever the car is cold. I had it checked out last winter, and the mechanic just said that the car was cold. I just don't think it should take 20 minutes of warming up for my car to drive. Is there anything that can be done for it?

  • What characteristic of a veterinarian makes you want to come back?

I manage a vet clinic, and work with several different vets. They all have different styles of interacting with clients and patients, and they also have different diagnostic approaches. I'm just curious what it may be about your vet that makes you loyal to him or her. And the opposite corollary.. What trait about a veterinarian has made you never return to him or her?

  • Why are so many pet owners clueless about their pet's microchip?

I work at a vet clinic, and every so often people bring in stray animals they've found to check for microchips. I can't tell you how often there have been microchips, but no owner information is registered with that microchip #. It happened twice this week-- and one couple who I managed to find online with a lost pet ad on craigslist even said in their ad that the dog was microchipped. Yet they seemed unable to understand that the microchip is UTTERLY WORTHLESS unless you actually go online or call the 800 number and give the microchip company your contact information.

Now, I wonder if it's shelters that implant the chips, then inadequately explain the way it works when the pet is adopted.

Any folks out there with a microchipped dog? Did you register it?!

P.S. A little secret I found out: My dog has a HomeAgain Microchip . It's very difficult to find this in writing on the website, but you don't need to pay the silly $14.99 annual membership fee to keep your registration active. The fee is just for all the worthless bells and whistles. They'll keep your contact information on hand and available at no cost.

  • How can I help get my dog's coat more shiny, healthy?

He's an 8 year old Aussie mix, very healthy. I feed him Innova'a Evo diet (grain free) due to a past problem with soft stools. Earlier this summer, I had him shaved down because he gets so hot. His fur on his back is now drier and coarser than the rest of his coat, and it hasn't grown back. His sides, mane and belly are almost fully grown out, but his back fur is about half the length. Just curious if anyone has any tips for lustrous coats.

  • What kind of yard bug do I have and how do I get rid of it?

My yard has some brown, dead, completely bare spots and some others heading that way. I've used Scott's weed and feed fertilizer twice this year, and a pesticide once, a couple weeks ago. I think there's some type of insect burrowing in my grass, killing it. In the dead areas there are holes about 1/2inch in diameter, sometimes with clods of dirt on top. I have seen crickets around. Could this damage be the work of mole crickets? And can you kill them this late in the summer when they're past the larval stage? I live in Missouri, if that helps.

  • Is it better to have two cats of the same gender or should I get one male and one female?

Would they get along better if they were opposite genders? I've heard conflicting things from friends.

  • Socializing a feral kitten?

I just took on a 11 week old foster kitten who need a little nudge out of the feral category. I've fostered quite a few kittens, and even a feral adult cat or two. This one stumps me a little. She hides and yowls. Freaks out hissing when you try to pick her up, but then becomes a purring lovebug as soon as she's on your lap. However, the second she's off the lap, you're enemy # 1 again. It's still early in the fostering, and usually I like to give the scaredy cats a little more time to get adjusted, but I had a bit of a situation tonight. My adult cats pushed open the door to her private room (to eat her kitten food, of course) and she darted out. I let her skitter around for the early evening, but I needed to get her back in that room so she could spend the night with her food and litterbox. I tried to lure her out from under my bed with food, but she was too quick. Later, however, she did dart out and I tried to scoop her up. She panicked and bit and scratched the hell out of me. I guess my question is, did I damage the future socialization of this kitty? And does anybody have any feral kitten tips for me?
