Christians, why ask for prayers from others, especially strangers on the internet?

Not that every Christian does of course - but I see this a lot online.

If someone learns there is a difficulty in my family and they offer up prayers of their own accord, I would be gracious, appreciative of their kindness, and thank them.

But it seems to me kind of rude to solicit others to pray on my behalf...especially complete strangers. Not that we shouldn't be kind to strangers, but really, prayer panhandling?

And besides, if God answers all prayers, why would He not answer yours if you are the only one praying for whatever it is you are praying for?

Does having larger numbers of folks praying for the same thing move that prayer up the waiting list to be answered more quickly or something? Or does this put it in better favor of a "yes" answer vs. a "no" answer from God?

I'm curious what the line of thinking is on this.

Thank you.

Update:

Mikeus, uh, thank you, but then all you focused on was the strangers part and didn't answer the rest.

No Chance - so, support and help one can get only in the form of prayer?

Jakal - Duh, I am saying by my question and details that I am not clear on Christian prayer requests. My screen name is a play on words dear, not a claim to know-it-all.

Mikeus pretty much answered the part about strangers/online etc.

You asked, "And besides, if God answers all prayers, why would He not answer yours if you are the only one praying for whatever it is you are praying for?"

Firstly, God does not answer "all" prayers, there is a conditional response, in other words you do this, I will do that. Gods says, "When the righteous cry out, I hear them." He also states, "The effectual fervent prayers of the righteous man/woman availeth much." Righteous in the greek simply means those who are in right standing with God. There are some people who go to church very faithfully but prayers are not heard because they are not living it, their hearts are not in it, God says, " you worship me with your lips, but your hearts are far from me." In the kingdom of God, the Lord requires a conditional response. The only prayers he hears from a sinner are the prayers of repentance.

You said, "Does having larger numbers of folks praying for the same thing move that prayer up the waiting list to be answered more quickly or something? Or does this put it in better favor of a "yes" answer vs. a "no" answer from God?"

Depends if the folks who are praying are living right. Otherwise, the furthest their prayers are going is to the ceiling. But yes, the more people praying, the more powerful it will be as you will see speedy results. God says, "where there are two or three that are gathered together in my name, there am I in the mist." He also states, "1 can chase 1000, 2 can chase 10,000 to flight." Meaning, the forces that are hindering, oppressing, hurting, etc.

Hope this helps. Have a great day! :)

I sort of have my own take on Christianity.

So God doesn't answer all prayers otherwise everyone would just prayer for everything we wanted and we would become very greedy. Like in Bruce Almighty. Plus, He can't make everything right for everybody - the world wouldn't function properly if all was good all the time. If there was no death, there could be no birth either.

And the part about posting prayers on the internet, you could ask why anybody posts anything on the internet I suppose.

    Prayers For Others

  • 1 decade ago

I have just started reading the bible and it is written that you should pray in private and do not shout out about it like pagans lol

Also it is said that God already knows before you ask when you are praying for something so basically there is no need to ask anyone else when God has already received the message!!

How are strangers across the world supposed to know what they are praying for, as far as they know they could be praying for something bad for all they know!!!

Prayer is the greatest way to communicate with God. Sometimes when people are going through a lot their prayers get cloudy because they have a lot on their minds. It's very biblical to have others pray for you in. Jesus prayed for his disciples; so why wouldn't we pray for each other?

It makes no difference, Crystal, it's still soliciting something from others in Y!A and as such, it's against the Terms of usage according to Yahoo's rules. And yes, it IS panhandling of a sort. for my part I never could understand why people ASK for others to pray for them too. It would make more sense to me to state your problem(s) and let people volunteer their prayers on their own initiative. They MAY also be able to volunteer mundane or physical assistance as well. Or they may simply offer their own emotional support. but to ask for a specific KIND of remedy to your problems infers that you are ONLY willing to accept that sort of help and ignore all others. this is exactly what a panhandler does, insist on money rather than asking for housing, food, warm clothes, a job, Etc.

I FIND IT PECULIAR THAT SOMEONE WOULD ASK IN INTERNET.

BUT JESUS SAID THAT A PRAYER DONE TOGETHER WITH OTHER PEOPLE PRAYING HAS MUCH MORE STRENGHTH.HENCE THE GATHERING UP OF ACCOLITES IN A CHURCH .

THATS WHY IN THE CATHOLIC RELIGION ESPECIALLY , SEEING THE SERVICE ON TV ,AND BEING IN CONDITION OF WALKING TO CHURCH, INSTEAD OF ATTENDING IT,IS NOT VALID.CATHOLICS HOLD HANDS AS WELL IN SOME CHURCES AS THEY ARE PRAYING.TO PROVE THAT TOGETHER WE CAN OBTAIN MUCH MORE.

THIS IS DONE IN ALL RELIGIONS INCLUDING THE NON CHRISTIANS.

WITCHES THEMSELVES GATHER UP AND PRAY TOGETHER ,OR INVOKE.NO DIFFERENCE.

THE EMPATHY ONE FEELS FOR THE ASKING PERSON PLAYS AN IMPORTANT ROLE..

ONE MUST BE DESPERATE THOUGH OR HAVE NO ONE AROUND, OR SIMPLY SEEKIING POPULARITY TO ASK FOR PRAYING PEOPLE IN INTERNET

.I DONT THINK CHRISTIAN RELIGIONS WOULD APPROVE OF IT.

This is very much like your other question. Meh. So I leave you with a great quote. "Debating Creationists on the topic of Evolution is rather like trying to play chess with a pigeon; it knocks the pieces over, craps on the board, and flies back to its flock to claim victory." - Scott D. Ok the ones who do it on internet just exaggerate.

    It's sort of a support.

If we are in Christ, we really aren't strangers, but brothers and sisters.

Matt 18:20 For where two or three come together in my Name, there am I with them.
