Of all religous groups ... Why do atheists have the highest rate of suicide?

http://www.iasp.info/pdf/papers/Bertolot%E2%80%A6

According to this study and several others, atheists have over twice the rate of suicides compared to religious groups. Any thoughts to why that might be?

I downloaded the pdf, and the evidence of greater suicides is based on suicide rates in officially atheist nations like China or Albania. Thus, we don't have direct evidence here that atheism is associated with greater suicides, but evidence that in cultures where religion has been driven underground through persecution and has had limited influence on social mores, suicides are markedly higher. At any rate, let's consider why atheism might dispose a person to suicide.

To be an atheist is to deny that we are created with a purpose by a benevolent God who establishes objective rights and moral duties. This denial has broad implications; it is not simply an isolated "disbelief," as atheists disingenuously claim. Thus, when atheists suffer setbacks or depression, suicide is an option on the table, unlike for Christians or Muslims. Atheists reason that suicide will end their problems rather than leading to eternal regret in the exile of hell, as recognized by most religious people.

Seeing life as a meaningless accident, a sudden appearance of life in an absurd reality, where problems can be managed by self-murder, likely disposes atheists to higher suicide rates. From the perspective of biology, any creature that attacks and murders itself is clearly acting insanely. Thus, the suicide-atheism link suggests that atheism has an element of psychosis to it.

    Cheers,

After doing a search on religions and beliefs and stats on suicides in these areas, it appears that there are at least 2 times the amount of suicides stemming from non religions than with religions. Evidently the "religious" stimulus and devotions seems to serve to protect or as a barrier or buffer for suicides rather than a catalyst.. I would guess if I were to do a statistical search on suicides in homosexual rates compared to heterosexual ratios in a comparative per capita or percentages per group, we would see much the same. Although, perhaps might be said about many other sinners in the Bible as compared to non-sinners

Cos they believe after death there will be nothing with the life lived, whereas theist fear of soul's continuity and God's reward & punishments. Theist believe even after death there won't be peace due to wrong death.
