Windows security showing virus threats in PC?

Last night when i clicked on a link following a search on Firefox, some files suddenly downloaded and Windows security popped up to show there is virus and a list of virus eg confliker, win32 something and one was marked critical threat. The windows security showed 9 virus in the C-hard drive, 1 in My docs, and 1 in another part of hard drive.

I have run my antivirus AVG twice now and v-cleaner once but no virus is detected so far, only tracking cookies, still running.

What is the best thing to do to get rid of these threats, worried about infected files and what damage if any is done already? I have restored the computer to the as on 19th by system restore but not sure if that will help.

techies and experts here could you pl guide me to clean any hidden threats in my pc, i am afraid to open any of my documents or use a program?

thanks!

Update:

1 of the listed virus that showed in the pop up by Windows security is a Trojan, it says.

Update 2:

Have Windows xp, and windows security popped up to show the threats listed.

Update 3:

Windows updates as and whn updates come in..

Update 4:

Darren-I did not click inside the pop up box as it said Save file ...

Thanks

Have run av and malware stuff, it has worried me tremendously and still have not opened any of my docs.

Shall get one of the AV mentioned asap.

    Windows security is a Trojan.

The pop up box is a trick, to get you to click on the "fix now" or similar button. This is a trick to get your permission to install their virus or malware. It looks like you did not click inside of the pop up box, but I can't be certain. AVG isn't the greatest AV and you should do some free online AV scans.

AV Security Suite is a scareware and ransomware program from the same family as Antivirus Soft and AntiSpyware Soft. The developers of this program are distributing AV Security Suite through the use of hacked sites, spam, and Trojans that install it onto your computer without your permission. Once installed AV Security Suite will be configured to start automatically when your computer starts. Once started it will scan your computer and state that there are numerous infections, but will not let you remove any of them until you purchase the program. All of these scan results are fake and are only being shown to trick you into purchasing the program, which you should obviously not do.

If you are running older software, and not updating Windows, you may find that you will be able to remove this program, but then become infected again within a short period of time. This is because the malware developers are hacking legitimate sites or inserting malware ads that use vulnerabilities in common programs such as Adobe Reader, Flash, and Windows to install the malware onto your computer. If you do not update your programs to remove these security holes then the next time you visit a hacked site distributing this rogue, AV Security Suite will be installed on to your computer. A great tool that can be used to scan your computer for outdated and vulnerable programs is the free Secunia Personal Software Inspector program. When you scan your computer with this program it will display a report showing all programs and Windows updates that should be installed in order to fix security holes and vulnerabilities. It is advised that all users scan their computer with this program in order to prevent your computer from being infected again after you clean it. A guide on how to install and use this program can be found here:

There are a lot of different ideas about what is the best antivirus software on the market. I tried a lots of AV programs. The best for me is Avira, the latest version is amazing, it's realiable, safe. You can get it for free here http://bit.ly/1mO5Tsb

IF you must use windowz, Comodo security is far better than anything else that's free, and much better than what you can pay for in a lot of cases.

    |However dumping Microsof and getting a good Linux alternatice, such as Ubuntu, would free you from the terror of malware, spyware, and all th garbage floating around the web.

    1. you don't have a virus.

    2. you do have malware.

    3. the name of the program telling you that you have a virus or a trojan is the name of your malware.

    4. tell us the name of that program ? It the one its asking you to buy ? (don't buy it).

    5. will free malwarebytes run ? (full scan)

Some programmes say that they're downloading a virus on to your computer, but they aren't, it's just to scare you or something.
