See 1st site below to read all passport application info and to print out the forms. the cost is currently $135 and it takes 6 weeks.
American citizens may VISIT the UK without a visa for up to 6 months , but NOT work. Moving to another country to work temporarily , or immigrating permanently involve a great deal more than just filling out some papers. it is extremely complex, takes a long time, and has large fees. Most countries have very restrictive immigration rules. The UK and other European countries are nearly impossible of an American to get a work visa or immigrate to. The UK and most European countries belong to the European Union. all citizens of E.U. countries may live and work in any E.Ul. country without a visa. all employers must offer all jobs to Europeans fist. Americans must have a work visa...this puts them at the end of an endless line. You must find an employer to hire you, and sponsor your visa. This means you need to be highly educated and fantastically skilled in a much needed job that no European can be found to fill...impossible. This is true of all E.U. countries. See 2nd site below. It is equally difficult for a European to work in the U.S. and nearly impossible to immigrate. Few people have any idea of the difficulty of living and working in a foreign country until they seriously look into it.

Well, you can get passports at your local post office - I think they're about $100.00 each when all is said and done.
Getting authorization to work in England is another matter. You'll need to find a job with an employer who's willing to sponsor you, and I'm not sure the best way to do that. You could start with visiting England and putting your resume out.
If you don't have a marketable skill that's in demand, though, you probably won't have much luck.
Good luck.

You need a U.S. Passport and they will automatically give you a 45 to 90 day visa when you get to Immigration at HEATHROW or Gatwick.. but you CAN NOT WORK IN ENGLAND and if they think you want to do that, you WILL be on the next flight back to the U.S. WHY is that AmeriKans think moving to a foreign country is like moving to IOWA?

Agree with @Charlie also England is going through a bad recession still unemployment is 2 million and there are no jobs for the Brits so you will find it extremely difficult to get into the country let alone find work.
