Who thinks genres shouldn't even exist?

We've all gone through it numerous times...all the different rock genres. But who else thinks artists shouldn't have to be put in a category? It's like their music ability is limited to one box...why are musicians forced to keep within this "box?" I hope someone understands where I'm trying to get at...

Update:

Death: I get what you're saying...like you put it-- it's fine for organizing purposes, but not when people try to make that band into something they're not.

I understand. Some bands for example, you hear people say 'psh, that's not metal, they aren't metal'.. well maybe they aren't trying to be.

It's like, people need to stop seeing bands how they think they're meant to be, and start seeing them for what they ARE. If you don't like it because it doesn't fit into your taste, don't think it should.

I think genre's are useful when trying to identify your music, but that's as far as i'd go. I don't really see them as important, they do annoy me.

  • As someone here already said, it's human nature to want to have things categorized. I'm a person who can be extremely disorganized if I'm not staying on top of things, and so naturally I rely heavily on genre categorization. Personally I can't possibly imagine making up genres in my iTunes becaust that just seems...unorganized. Nothing against the people who do this. Don't get me wrong though, I hear what you're saying and you make sense. I'm not one to engage in heated gender battles. I like to classify which genre of metal a band is, but at the end of the day I can easily say "they're a metal band..." Hope I made any sense.

Personally, I disregard Genres in my Itunes, and I've just discovered through correspondence with a new friend in London that what might mean one thing over there, might mean something different over here. I suppose Genres might be helpful when searching for a particular shuffle, for example a roommate of mine searches for all Techno and that helps him to play what he likes, but also Itunes can get a genre wrong as well. When I load in individual tracks from mix CDs I shine genres on, as I tend to in real life. I refuse to be pigeonholed or have my taste narrowed, I love MUSIC, and the range I listen to sometimes startles even me.

Genres are just sheer labeling for the sake of labeling.

Like Intelligent Dance Music. Does that make all other dance music "retard dance music"?

genres and categories allow people to find what they want easily, and also it's human nature to want to categorize things, but I don't see this as a limitation on creativity, no one has to try and fit a box if they don't want to.

I don't bother genre tagging my music though, there's so much of it it would take forever, so it's just good old alphabetical order for me.

on a personal level I agree. I make up my own genres and "file" them accordingly. me and the other one in my household store our music separate because I cant follow the alphabet.

in order to market and sell the music it has to be called something. as for me, i put all my music in alphabetical order and disregard the label.
