Why was the Union Jack so popular in the 80's?

I was watching Ferris Bueller's Day Off the other day and I saw that he had a giant Union Jack on the back of his door. I read somewhere else that the Union Jack was extremely popular in the 80's and it was just cool to have it on things. Why?

British flags were common in pop culture in the 80's and are still popular because of the punk rock movement, have you ever heard of The Sex Pistols. Most of the bands in the punk movement were from the UK and would normally display British flags because of their anti-establishment idealism. They were kinda making a mockery of the British government by using British flags in punk shows and stuff. Watch this and maybe you will understand why they became popular. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xJmouowPH5k&feature... Union Jacks I mean.
