I'm desperate for help!?
I'm having a problem with my computer. In order to do my work (I work at home via internet), I have to download my work assignments. Lately, the work is downloading SOOO slowly and it's taking a big chunk of my time that could be spent actually working and getting stuff done. Instead, I'm spending what seems like forever just sitting and staring at the monitor, waiting for downloads to complete. I have high-speed internet with a cable modem, but lately, it's acting like dial-up service. I've also noticed that when I look at videos on the internet, the videos play only for a couple of seconds and then pause for a few seconds, and then resume playing for only a couple of seconds and then pause again, and this continues throughout the entire video clip. In all other ways, my computer seems to be behaving normally. Could the problem be with my cable modem (do I need a new one?) or could it be an issue with my computer? I don't know whether to call the cable company for service or if I should call a computer repair technician for service. Can anyone give me a clue as to what's wrong and what I should do about it? PLEASE!

try to power cycle your modem (turn it off, unplug the cable, leave it for 30 sec, then plug in the cable, then power on).
You say everything else is normal, so this may not apply, but make sure you've got at least 5GB free on your hard drive. Windows needs room for temporary files, cache, and (if you have little ram) Swap space (fake ram on the hard drive). If the hard drive is full, EVERYTHING will be slow.

If you leave your computer up and running all the time, first shut it down and bring it back up...
Next thing to do is some basic maintenance. Purge your internet cache, check your hard drive for available space, run disk cleanup, and not because it would need to be done in your situation, run defrag while you're running maintenance.
Knowing more about your computer would be helpful. What Windows are you running? Do you use a virus and malware software packages with live scan? How much disk space do you have free? How many startup programs are running? Last, have you installed any new programs recently?

Your guess about the cable modem sounds good. Call the cable company and they can test it remotely for free. If it is going bad they will supply a new one.

Sounds like virus, or malware activity on your computer.
Go here, and download"http://www.malwarebytes.org/%22. It is free.
Then you must run an antivirus program.Microsoft has a free one.Go to "http://www.microsoft.com/security/malwareremove/de...
Do this first, before calling Larry the Cable guy.
Good luck.
