I was trained as an Orthodox, however, lately I've entered a bat habit of sometimes switching to Southpaw, but it's strange because this has actually been working wonders for me. I am left footed, so technically, I should be a Southpaw, but I was always told to have your left foot forward. It confuses the crap out of my opponents when I suddenly switch to a Southpaw stance and let off a stinging left kick or spinning back kick and succeed.
I am well balanced in both stances, however I am more comfortable in Orthodox.

one ofthe best stances to utilize in a straight up unpredicted fight is the shizen kamae stance from ninpo taijutsu. fights can be unpredictable. this stance utilizes the natural way you are when you are juts going about your business, arms hanging legs spread apart, muscles relaxed. this is the most basic stance because it is natural. when a fight arises you can shift into and position or stance you need to be in.
In a martial arts match, depending on what comes about, i would either choose a receiving posture or an aggressive postiure by reaidng my opponent.

Try tkd fighting stance or boxing stance. Try to mix them up. It should be a perfect balance for punching and kicking.
