98 Ford Escort ZX2 DOHC, Timing Belt Broke?

98 Ford Escort ZX2 Dual Overhead Cam Engine. Timing Belt snapped off. After looking at the belt, the belt shows no signs of tear or wear, no dry rot. The timing belt snapped because of something else obviously. We put a new one on, and the car starts now but has a really rough idle. Any suggestions? I'm guessing the sensor that sits under the valve cover on the exhaust side next to the crankshaft is the issue. We tried taking the crankshaft out and it released a lot of air and oil. I don't know if this has anything to do with it as I'm not the most car savvy. Anybody's professional opinion is greatly appreciated.

Update:

I got scared there for a minute. My bad, not the crankshaft, the actuator.

    Hello'

This sounds to me like one of the cams or the crankshaft isn't lined up exactly. I am not sure if this engine has domed pistons or is a no tolerance engine. Now if this is a no tolerance engine and the engine kept turning when the belt broke, you could have bent some valves. This happens all the time. most of the time it is because the timing belt was over do to be change. Good Luck, Tom

The first thing that needs to be checked is that the timing is corrected/adjusted to factory specs before putting the new belt back on. No doubt this was done. But if it wasn't it would explain rough idle and needs to be adjusted immediately. Don't drive it around til you do!!! As for why the original belt broke (and you say there were no marks or wear) it could break if it was somehow (or accidently, or on purpose) partially cut. It just takes a small incision or partial cut for it to eventually break, and doesn't take all that long. I've seen it done. Also, I've had brand new parts malfunction TWICE in a row. The air and oil release is crankcase pressure buildup, that's all--it's normal. Don't remove the crank--this won't do anything for the timing--and now you'll want to have the crank seal checked so there is no crankcase leak! Take care of these two things and you won't blow the engine! If anything you will be turning the cam and crank pulleys to align the timing marks, then put on a knew belt!

The belt broke because it wasn't changed before it broke. You need to change them between 60,000-90,000 miles. Now that you've torn into the engine trying to extract the crankshaft, put all the parts in a basket, take that to a machinist and have the engine repaired and reassembled. I would never have attacked that poor engine the way you did.
