If Genesis is not to be taken literally, why did Jesus over and over quote that book as literal history?

Update:

Genesis is the foundation, apart from which we can’t really understand the magnitude of sin. Or the redemptive program of God, begun when God shed the blood of an animal to provide coats of skin for Adam and Eve, after He had given them His cryptic Gospel announcement in Genesis (3:15).

You are quite right. Christians who deny that Genesis is a historical account are undermining the Gospel they profess. It is very sad.

The whole Bible is to be taken Literally.

The Bible is meant to be Understood as a User Manual, Learned & Refered to as a History Book, Followed Like a Recipe and Cherished like a Love Letter. The Bible is all of the Above

There are some places where implicit thinking is required but it still remains literal

You've assumed that what Jesus said was of absolute truth. Also, you've assumed that exactly what Jesus said, was transcribed by his apostles. Do you see what I'm getting at? Or are you trying to prove a different point (Jesus can't be wrong therefore neither can Genesis).

back while i became a Christian, our church could clarify away such issues with the aid of pointing out the scripture that broadcasts the earth "became void and with out sort"; their clarification became that this void state lasted for an undetermined volume of time, and all such occurrences that required troublesome examination have been comfortably swept under this scriptural rug. additionally, I keep in mind being informed in church that some meteoric impacts have been area of God's technique interior the flood of Noah's time--the scripture the place it talks with regard to the waters breaking forth from the deep; supposedly, meteor impacts have been mandatory to shake those waters loose. stupid reasons, i comprehend, yet that's what our church taught.

    Genesis is literal history.

1--The kingdom of Nimrod has been proven to exist (dating to about 4000 BC).

2--"Eden" was an actual place and is mentioned about 214 times in clay tablets (dating to 2800-1800 BC).

3--Abraham's name has been found on an Egyptian execration bowl (made about 1850 BC).

4--Laban practiced what has been found to be in the laws of Hamurrabi and lived in his jurisdiction (c1800 BC).

5--The invasion of the Hyksos into Egypt can be traced in Genesis 36.

6--The war of the 4 kings against 5 describe a known alliance (the 4) that existed about 1950 BC.

7--The Biblical flood has been found in 5 other sources and match Genesis in many details, including the dimensions of the ark and who was on it (dates from sources unreliable).

8--The history given in Genesis in general terms (10 generations, then the flood, then the recovery) has been found in other sources (primary source dates to about 1850 BC, based on compilation of older texts).

9--The world once had "one language with few words" and can now be proven. This referred to a written language, not a spoken language, but it has been confirmed both in writing and with physical evidence (source dates to 2050 BC).

10--The immigration into Shinar has been found in other sources (source dates to 2200 BC).

11--The building of the Tower of Babel has been described in other sources in much the same way (source dates to 2100-2000 BC).

12--There is now a Sumerian version of the story of the Garden of Eden, and it can be shown that the Sumerians had a copy of Genesis 2-3 used to write it (several copies of the Sumerian version date to 2100-2000 BC).

    Maybe Jesus was wrong?

Or maybe the people who wrote the NT felt that they needed to support the myths in the OT so they spin doctored it up?

Because Jesus himself is not to be taken literally.

Exactly. Jesus knew that it was real because he was there.
