What is the best city in the USA to live there?

I'm from Brazil, but would like to visit the USA and would like to know what the best city to walk or even live? There is a city less violent? a quieter city?

Update:

. I am a homosexual, the prejudice is too obvious as here in Brazil?

sorry I ask this, is because I am curious and not akin to being attacked by Nazi groups

I'm not sure that it's THE one and only best state to live in, but I would actually put Minnesota high on the list. Yes, that's right, Minnesota. I know it might be "flyover country" to some people, but if you actually research it out you will see that the quality of life and standard of living here is in fact quite high. Do some searching online to see. The median household income is the 12th highest in the United States, the personal income per capita is ranked 11th, the percentage of the population holding at least a Bachelor's degree is the 10th highest in the United States, and the number of doctors per 100,000 residents is the 10th highest.

Meanwhile, the state is ranked low in areas we want to rank low in such as standing 35th in violent crime rate and 42nd in poverty rate. Sometimes I wonder if the North Star State isn't a well kept secret!

Take your pick of cities in Minnesota. If you want to live in an urban area, try the Minneapolis-St. Paul metro. The city is clean and even in the wintertime you can walk from building to building downtown because of the extensive skyway system. There is also plenty of culture there with venues for theatre and music. If you want a smaller city, try Rochester, home of the world renowned Mayo Clinic and consistently rated one of the best cities of its size to live in. If you like a small port city on a lake that is great for relaxing in the summer, try Duluth on the shores of Lake Superior. Our state is known for its abundance of lakes and state parks for camping, hiking, and boating.

I know that when most people think of the United States they think of cities like New York and Los Angeles that they hear about all the time on television and in the movies. However, allow me to remind you that the glamorous cities on the coast are NOT the whole country or even most of it! (Is Brazil nothing besides Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro? Of course not!) I am sure these cities would be wonderful to visit, but there is much more to the United States than the big name destinations. Besides, the cost of living and income inequality in some of these cities might be quite high.

There is another consideration for you as a Latin American--if one of your goals in visiting the United States is to get to know our culture, as I hope that it is, I would recommend staying away from areas in the southwest and Florida. These areas are heavily influenced by Spanish-speaking Latin America, and that might make it difficult for you to experience mainstream anglo-american culture. As a native speaker of portuguese you are probably at least quite familiar with Spanish given that most of the rest of South America speaks it. In heavily latinized areas of the country you may find it too easy to speak Spanish and socialize with other Latin Americans and not improve your english skills and make friends with anglo-americans. (If I went to Brazil and only stayed in neighborhoods with lots of english speaking foreigners, how much portuguese would I learn and how much would I learn about Brazilian culture?) Meanwhile, the central region of the United States is predominately anglo in culture, so you will have plenty of chances to perfect your english and see more of the mainstream US lifestyle. Also, here you will see all four seasons of the year with heat and sun in the summer and cold and snow in the winter.

I think it would be great for you to visit the east coast of the U.S. for the sake of seeing all of the historical sites that are there, but if you want to study or live in the United States long term the northern midwest is worth your serious consideration.

P.S. I just saw your additional note expressing concern that you would be targeted in the U.S. for being gay. Please understand that while Americans have various opinions about homosexuality, no matter what they believe the majority would never act out in violence against someone else over it. Remember that isolated incidents are what make the news--not the peaceful relations that exist day after day. You are especially unlikely to face this sort of problem in large cities like Minneapolis.

Depends if you're looking for a big city or a small city. Plenty of small cities have areas where you won't have to worry about crime too much. Personally, I enjoy the suburbs and even the county. Nicer people in those areas and less crime.

I've lived all over the place from the LA field to rural Tennessee, and Abilene, TX is simply proper! My children grew up right here and it is a exceptional position to are living. It's small sufficient to be pleasant, however with 3 universities and a strategic air drive base, there may be lots of tradition -- and we are most effective one hundred fifty miles from Ft. Worth if you happen to wish to seek advice from town.
